Mark Steenhuis keys Bandits' victory Six goals, four assists in win over Titans; Riggers rout Wings Mark Steenhuis scored six goals and dished out four assists Saturday night as the Buffalo Bandits upset the visiting Orlando Titans, 12-10, at HSBC Arena. Steenhuis single-handedly built Buffalo a lead it couldn't blow, scoring the game's first three goals and guiding the Bandits to an 8-5 halftime lead. In the only other Week Nine action, Calgary destroyed Philadelphia, 15-7, in Saturday night action at the Saddledome. Scott Ranger scored four goals for the Riggers, Tracey Kelusky added three more and Matt King stopped 40 of 47 shots faced.
Vinc, Leblanc named tops in February Titans goalie posted sub-9.00 GAA; Rock forward netted 31 assists At the end of January, a goaltender (Toronto netminder Bob Watson) was named the National Lacrosse League's Player of the Month and a Toronto rookie (Rock forward Garrett Billings) took home Rookie of the Month honors. A month later, the pattern repeats -- Orlando Titans goalie Matt Vinc was named Player of the Month earlier this week and Toronto's Stephan Leblanc claimed Rookie of the Month honors, both for February. Vinc went 2-1 in February, posting an impressive 8.62 goals-against average and stopping almost 84 percent of the shots he faced. Leblanc, meanwhile, tallied 31 points in six games, netting 14 goals and assisting on 17 others as the Rock went 3-3 in the month.
Further setbacks for Stealth, Rock A few weeks ago, the Washington Stealth and Toronto Rock were the class of the NLL, at least as far as wins and losses were concerned. Now, things are a little trickier for both clubs, certainly after each lost for the third time in succession Saturday night. The Stealth flew cross-country and dropped a tight one in Boston, 11-9, losing on two late Dan Dawson goals. Toronto, meanwhile, couldn't hold back the surging Orlando Titans, falling at home by a count of 16-12. Washington, at least, can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that its recent stumbles haven't yet cost it first place in the Western Division. Toronto, on the other hand, is now looking up at Orlando, which has a percentage-points lead on the Rock in the East standings. In other Week Eight action, Philadelphia snapped a five-game losing streak by winning at Buffalo, 15-11; Edmonton rallied past Rochester in overtime, 12-11; and Minnesota rallied past Colorado, 13-12.
Spirit of 76: Blazers win NLL's longest game Sean Morris scored on the first shot of double overtime Saturday night, lifting the Boston Blazers to a 12-11 victory over the Orlando Titans in the longest game in NLL history. Boston had to rally late just to force the extra session, scoring twice in the final 30 seconds (including a goal in the final second). The game lasted 76 minutes, 6 seconds, marking the first time since the league changed to a 15-minute overtime period that one sudden death period was insufficient. The weekend had a second strong storyline, as division-leading Washington and Toronto each lost again. The Stealth fell 13-9 at home on Friday, while the Rock dropped a 14-13 decision Sunday afternoon in Edmonton. Elsewhere in Week Seven, Minnesota routed Colorado, 15-5 behind four goals and five assists from Callum Crawford, while Rochester doubled up Philadelphia, 12-6; in each game, the losers managed only one goal after halftime.
Kilgour, Stroup, Tucker are Hall-bound The National Lacrosse League announced Monday that three forwards -- Rich Kilgour, Dan Stroup and John Tucker -- have been selected for enshrinement in the league's Hall of Fame. Last spring, Kilgour completed an eighteen-season career, all with the Buffalo Bandits and the last twelve years of which as the Bandits' captain. He tallied 94 goals and 223 assists in his career. Stroup also retired last spring, concluding a 13-year career with Portland. Stroup will likely be remembered best for a five-year run with Toronto, during which he helped the Rock to three Champion's Cups. Tucker, meanwhile, waited what seems like an eternity -- his playing career ended sixteen years ago. One of the league's first stars, Tucker played four seasons with Philadelphia and two more in Baltimore. He later coached the Thunder to the 1998 NLL Finals. The three honorees placed highest in voting among the league's member teams, current Hall of Fame members and the media. A day and location for the induction ceremonies was not announced.
Swarm swats away Stealth's perfect record And then there were none. The Washington Stealth, cruising along for several weeks as the NLL's final remaining unbeaten team, lost for the first time in 2010 on Saturday, falling behind early at Minnesota and losing to the Swarm, 16-12. It would have been the Stealth's seventh victory to start the season, the same number of wins the team racked up all of last season. Washington wasn't the only division leader to suffer a loss this weekend, though. Two nights after dispatching Edmonton without incident, 16-7, the Toronto Rock coughed up a fourth-quarter lead in Calgary and lost to the resurgent Roughnecks, 10-8. Elsewhere in Week Six, Rochester held off Boston, 11-9, in a Saturday matinee, and Buffalo welcomes John Tavares back to action (after missing six games due to injury) with a 13-11 victory at Philadelphia.
