Roughnecks locate winning ways in 17-11 winKonopliff's five goals not enough for Ottawa to top CalgaryBob Cochrane Outsider's Guide Game Correspondent Kaleb Toth scored four goals, and Ben Prepchuk and Jason Wulder added three apiece, as the Calgary Roughnecks claimed its first-ever win by defeating the Ottawa Rebel, 17-11, at Corel Centre on Sunday in front of a crowd of just over 5,100. Less than a minute into the game, Jamie Raffan found the penalty box for interference and Wulder took advantage, opening the scoring for the Roughnecks about 30 seconds later. This was the first of a string of six unanswered goals that shook the Rebel team. Four of the goals came on the power play, two of them with the Rebel down by two men, over the next ten minutes of the first quarter. Chris Konopliff scored the first of his five goals with just over two minutes left in the first quarter, and D.J. Serr finished the first quarter scoring with 30 seconds left on the clock. Seeming off-balance, missing many passes, dropping balls, and not as quick at picking up loose balls, the Rebel found itself behind, 6-2, after one quarter. The teams alternated scoring in the second quarter, with four each. This period apparently was Ottawa's turn to take advantage of the power play, netting three while a man up. Two of those were while a Roughneck was serving a penalty for too many men on the floor. Despite these two penalties, the Roughnecks' player changes were very smooth and quick throughout the game. D'Arcy Bethiaume scored the highlight goal of the quarter off a pass from Chris Prat, who intercepted a Rebel pass. The score at the half read Calgary 10, Ottawa 6, with the Roughnecks leading on shots, 43-33. Goals by Konopliff and Mike Benedict early in the third quarter got the Rebel within two goals, then Kaleb Toth scored for the Roughnecks at 9:02 to start his team on a run of five goals in a row, the last of these early in the fourth quarter), putting the Rebel in a hole that it couldn't escape. 14-8, Calgary, after three. The Roughnecks came out flying to start the fourth quarter, scoring a goal early and had roughly double the number of shots in the first five minutes as the Rebel. A goal by Ottawa's Matt McLean calmed things down a bit, but with two more goals by each team, the Rebel never moved much closer. For his five goals in the losing effort, Konopliff was named player of the game. For Calgary, Kaleb Toth topped the stat sheet on four goals and two assists, while Jordan Sundher showed his face-off skills, winning 18 of 28 draws. Matt King played well in goal for the Roughnecks, and the defense in front of him played well, too, keeping the Rebel shooters to the outside and forcing what seemed to be a lot of shots to go wide of the goal or right at King. At the other end, Matt Disher faced 71 Roughneck shots, but he was not able today to stop a hungry Calgary team that was determined to win after losing their first two games to Montreal.
