Panos, Toth, Goundrey Rough up the 'Sharks in 20-13 win

Three Calgary stars combine for 12 goals, 15 assists

Chris Panos scored six goals, Kaleb Toth added five, and new addition Kyle Goundrey contributed eight assists as the Calgary Roughnecks defeated the Columbus Landsharks, 20-13, Friday night at the Saddledome.

The plane had barely landed bringing the newest Roughnecks home while the final details were being set on the tilt against the Landsharks but newcomers Goundrey, John Olson and Jessie Phillips -- acquired in Friday's trade which sent Chris Prat to Vancouver -- fit like a glove in their first action in Calgary.

The game started like the majority of the Roughnecks' games, with the opposition getting the chance to celebrate first. The Landsharks jumped out to a 2-0 lead, including a shorthanded tally from Kasey Beirnes before the Roughies got going. In fact it was Goundrey who slipped one past Phil Wetherup for the Roughnecks to get on the scoreboard. Hometown hero Kaleb Toth knotted up the score at two before Ben Prepchuk scored with 1.4 seconds left on the clock to close out the first quarter.

The Roughnecks continued their run into the second quarter with a second goal from Kaleb Toth, plus D'Arcy Berthiaume's fourth goal of the season. The Landsharks interupted the five-goal run on a Cory Kahoun goal, but it was answered in a hurry by Adam Bysouth, scoring on an almost perfect feed from Matt King. Spencer Martin recorded the game's first power play goal to keep the 'Sharks within two, but then Panos struck, scoring twice in a row before Kahoun and Toth traded goals.

After the seventh Roughneck goal Phil Wetherup took a breather in favour of Mike Miron. With the score 9-5 deja vu hit. Just like last weekend against New York, the Roughnecks hit a mental block with just minutes remaining in the half and it took all they could muster to hit the dressing room with a lead. The Landsharks were hindered by slow line changes all night long, but for three minutes, they clicked. By the time the intermission buzzer sounded the 'Sharks had fought back to a 9-8 halftime score.

But what sets this week apart from last week is the halftime pep talk. This time it held the Roughnecks' imaginations and they flew out of the room to score six straight. With Mark Steenhuis in the sin bin for a brutal hit from behind on Bruce Alexander, the Roughneck power play that had entered the game eighth in the NLL scored two quick goals -- Panos with one, Jason Wulder with the other, and Goundrey assisting on both. The NLL mercy rule came into play and it returned to five-on-five action but that didn't slow down the goal rush. Prepchuk assisted on two goals (by Panos and Toth) before deciding to score one himself, then it was Panos rounding out the third quarter hat trick with his fifth tally of the night.

Between the Prepchuk and Panos goals, the Landshark goalies traded seats again with Wetherup returning to the pipes. With the Roughnecks on a run, Gewas Schindler scored his first of the night followed up a Steenhuis goal, but before things got out of hand, Phillips scored off another long ball by Matt King to end the third quarter with the score sitting at 16-10.

The fourth quarter was full of chances and a lot of missed opportunities by both clubs. The Landsharks couldn't find an offensive rythym early on, and with a man in the box for goaltender interference after a huge collision between Kahoun and King, in which Kahoun got the worst of it, Panos gunned home his sixth of the night, from Wulder and Toth. Schindler had tried doing things on his own all night long and finally it paid off for him, scoring early on in the quarter. But Toth and his red shoes had an answer for the goal with his fifth of the night. Prepchuk recorded the hat trick about halfway through the quarter before the 'Sharks showed some life. "Life" being a relative term describing a team down 19-11, but Schindler scored on the power play before Neal Powless tossed in a Steenhuis pass to cut the Roughies lead to seven.

The Landshark defense then stepped up, meeting the transition players as they stepped off the bench and covering them the whole 30 seconds, which was a good tactic until the final minute where the Roughnecks picked up every rebound and loose ball available. With three players somehow behind the entire Landshark squad, Prepchuk hammered in the coffin-closing nail, recording his fourth of the night with less than ten seconds remaining in the game.

King played exceptionally well all game long, finishing with 52 saves. Panos was the Molson Player of the Game for his six-goal, three-assist effort. Toth matched Panos on points, with five goals and four assists, while Goundrey managed to rack up 8 helpers to go with his lone goal, almost doubling his season totals.

Next up for the Roughnecks is the New Jersey Storm, one week from today. The Landsharks, meanwhile, sit out until 28 December, when they host the New York Saints.
