Roughies reach .500 for first time in 20-11 win

Calgary goes to 3-3 in romp over New Jersey

Led by five goals from Kyle Goundrey and four from Chris Panos, the Calgary Roughnecks topped the New Jersey Storm, 20-11, on Friday at the Pengrowth Saddledome.

With a decent crowd of 6,548 cheering them on, the Roughnecks took to their home floor in search of their first-ever winning streak. Coming off a win the week before against the Landsharks, the Roughies could even their season record at 3-3 with a win over the 1-4 New Jersey Storm.

The Storm, meanwhile, was seeking its first win under new head coach Jim Brady, who took over the helm before last week's loss at Washington.

The first quarter started off with a new twist to it. The Roughies actually scored first when Jesse Phillips found the space to put one in behind Derek General. Phillips picked up his second point of the night when his pass to John Olson ended up on Adam Bysouth's stick and behind General, pacing the Roughnecks to a two-goal lead. Grant Johnston broke up the Roughneck party taking a pass from Matt Panetta and sliding it in past Matt King. But following that the Roughnecks stormed back out into a comfortable lead. Goundrey picked up his first of the night followed by a double shot from Chris Panos, the second of them coming on the power play. But with the score 5-1, something happened on the New Jersey bench to wake them up. Billy LeFeurve scored, followed by Cory Leigh on a breakout play. The quarter wrapped up 5-3 for the Roughnecks, with the shots even at 16.

The second quarter kept the New Jersey pressure at its highest. Johnston scored early in the quarter, this time on the power play. But when things got tight, the Roughnecks answered the bell. Suddenly they put together a six-goal run starting with Panos finishing off the hat trick. Kaleb Toth scored one off a great pass from Matt King, then played the role of setup man on the power play, giving Goundrey his second of the night.

Only six minutes and 26 seconds into the second quarter, Derek General gave up his last goal of the night when Benny Prepchuk decided to score. General finished with 16 saves on 25 shots faced, but trading goalies didn't help New Jersey's fortunes. Once Matt Roik finished making a couple nice saves, John Kilbride converted a fast break opportunity, followed by Goundrey's third goal of the half. Roik's efforts translated into two goals allowed on seven shots. When the halftime buzzer, the Roughnecks went into the dressing room with an 11-4 lead.

The third quarter started much like the second ended, with Goundrey taking the time to score on Roik. The Storm regrouped, though, and crawled back into the game, scoring three in a hurry. Johnston finished off his hat trick, followed by Shawn Nadelen and Travis Kilgour adding to the offense. Through this and the entire first half as well, Joe Finstad did everything but score. Finstad took shot after shot but Matt King, with help from the post once or twice, just had Finstad's number all game long. John Kilbride scored to regain the six-goal lead and round out the only losing quarter of the game for the Roughies.

The fourth quarter was when the scoring exploded. Eleven of the game's 31 goals were scored during this fifteen-minute set. New Jersey started the explosion with a shorthanded tally, thanks to the efforts of LeFeurve, who ended up behind Calgary defenders Phillips and Ryan Campbell, who must've had the impression that the other would knock LeFeurve for a loop in front of the crease, there but when neither did, the rookie Storm player flipped one over the shoulder of King to make it 13-8.

Calgary, obviously embarrassed defensively, used their offensive firepower to make amends. Still on the power play, Prepchuk took a pretty passing play and finished it. Goundrey then picked up his second assist in a row, sending a long pass for Phillips to convert. Panos got back on the scoresheet with a breakout goal thanks to quick passing from captain Bruce Alexander and King, then Goundrey scored his fifth and final goal of the night to round out the four-goal Roughneck run.

Scott Stewart scored the Storm's ninth goal of the night before Campbell tallied his first of the season, taking on three Storm defenders by himself. It was a goal that really riled up Matt Roik, who had choice words for his defenders, and rightly so, as it was a broken play in the corner that turned into a scoring chance with the defensive-minded Campbell being the only Roughneck at that end of the floor.

Matt Panetta then decided that assists weren't enough as he took a nice pass across the floor from Stewart and stuck it behind King. But as they did all night long, the Roughnecks had an offensive answer. This time, a pair of ex-Ravens got together for a goal, with Johnny Olson taking a pass from Phillips making it spin over the goal line. Toth finished the Roughneck scoring when he scooped up a Watson-to-Toll-type pass from King and outran two defensemen before finding an opening, top shelf on Roik. New Jersey started their pressure offense, albeit too little too late, but on three rushed possessions, Panetta managed to score his second of the night sandwiched by a few great saves made by King.

When the beancounters racked up all the shots, the board showed a 60-55 advantage for the Roughies and the only stat that matters sat as a 20-11 Roughneck win. Next up for the Roughies is a return engagement with this same Storm squad in eight days. The Storm, meanwhile, heads off to Vancouver to face the Ravens on Sunday.
