Wings' visit to Buffalo snowed outNo makeup date announcedR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Tonight's game between the Philadelphia Wings and Buffalo Bandits was postponed yesterday due to severe weather conditions. Since Monday, more than eighty inches of snow have fallen in Buffalo, destroying snowfall records in its wake and leaving the western New York city crippled. The decision to postpone the game was actually made on Thursday, after the teams consulted with the league. The Wings, unable to fly to Buffalo due to all local airports being closed and being wary of snowy travel after a disasterous bus trip to Syracuse in a blizzard three years ago, and the Bandits, already concerned about poor attendance during the between-holidays weekend, agreed to call off the game. This is the fourth-ever postponement of a Wings game, but only the second for the Bandits. In February 2000, the Wings' visit to Albany was postponed to the following day, then to early April when travel from Philadelphia was impossible during a blizzard. In March 1993, both the Wings and Bandits had home games postponed by a week due to what was referred to then as "The Blizzard of the Century." Pittsburgh was scheduled to visit Philadelphia, while Detroit was to have been Buffalo's opponent that day. When the game finally is played -- no makeup date was announced -- something will have to give. Neither the Wings nor Bandits have ever lost a "postponement game." -30- |
