Washington Powerless to stop 'Sharks, 19-15Columbus wins third game in a rowR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Led by Gewas Schindler's hat trick, the Columbus Landsharks extended their surprising winning streak to three games early Sunday evening with a 19-15 victory over the visiting Washington Power. This is the second time in as many seasons that the Landsharks upset the Power on a Sunday afternoon, following a 9-7 win at MCI Center on 21 January 2001. In an scene eerily reminiscient of that game a year ago, the Landsharks opened up a 5-2 lead after one quarter of play. Steve Gloeckner opened the scoring for Columbus just 41 seconds into the game, but the Power came back with strikes from Matt Shearer and Paul Gait to grab the 2-1 advantage. That was the last time in the game the Power had more goals than the Landsharks. However, just as easily as the Power seemingly frittered away their chances, back they came, putting an eight-spot on the board in the second period to bring the score all square at halftime, a sawbuck apiece, the last two of those goals coming from Gait, who finished with four on the evening. The Landsharks, though, were ready to turn the tides and sweep the Power out to sea. Bill Greer scored shorthanded four minutes into the second half, then Kyle Arbuckle found rope on the power play six minutes later to build a 12-10 lead. Gary Gait cut the deficit to one late in the third quarter, but the Power could move no closer after the Landsharks opened the fourth with a four-goal run. Neal Powless scored twice, Kasey Beirnes and Brent Rothfuss once each, and the 'Sharks were on top by a comfortable 16-11 margin. "They couldn't believe how badly they got outplayed," Schindler said after the game. "When you outplay veterans like them, they get frustrated and want to fight and want to do things physically. That's part of the game. It worked out for us. I could see it on their faces how frustrated they were." After Arbuckle all but shut off the Power on a goal with three minutes to play, Washington -- as it's done before in such situations -- got chippy. The Landsharks, though, would have none of it. "Our team wanted it more," Columbus goaltender Ken Montour said. "We outran them. We picked up the loose balls two to every one of theirs." Well, it was actually a narrow 82-80 lead on loose balls, but who's counting? In addition to Paul Gait's four goals, Gary Gait and Del Halladay each added three goals for the Power. Schindler (three goals, three assists) and Arbuckle (four goals, one assist) led the Landsharks on the stat sheet.
