Attack stops oil flow, beats Roughnecks

Albany tops Calgary, 12-7, in Sunday showdown at Saddledome

Led by four goals from Mike Regan, the Albany Attack squashed the Calgary's Roughnecks' potent offense, winning 12-7 on Sunday at the Pengrowth Saddledome.

A nice-sized crowd of 9,271 filed in for the snowy afternoon tilt between the Attack and the Roughnecks. Things started off fast, with Calgary's Jason Wulder putting one behind Rob Blasdell a mere thirty-four seconds into the game. Little did the Roughneck faithful know that it would be the last cheering opportunity for a long while. Albany answered back with goals from Regan, Josh Sanderson and finally an untouched Mike Ladouceur, rounding out the first quarter scoring with the Attack up 3-1.

The second quarter was a carryover from the first, with Regan opening things up with his second tally of the afternoon. Then it was Jamie Grimoldby, finishing a Josh Sanderson pass. Jesse Phillips took the only penalty of the quarter for holding and it didn't take long for Albany to respond to the man advantage. Sanderson took a Gary Rosyski pass and fired a long submarine shot into the goal to make it 6-1. Things stayed that way until the haltime buzzer and, heading into the dressing rooms, the Attack were outshooting the Roughnecks by a 21-15 margin.

The halftime pep talk sure worked -- it just worked a little harder for the Attack, because a minute and twenty-five seconds into the second half, Regan scored to get his hat trick. Then Sanderson recorded his own hat trick, taking an outside passing play and converting it. A bench minor was called on the Roughnecks for trying the extra-fast transition, and the penalty led to a Jamie Grimoldby power play tally. Sanderson factored in on all three Attack goals during this run -- in fact, his assist on the Grimoldby goal was his seventh point of the night.

When Shaydon Santos took an ill-advised high sticking call, it finally woke up the Roughnecks from their slumber. Going roughly thirty-five minutes without a goal, it was Wulder scoring the power play goal to get Calgary back on the board. Matt Green set a nice pick play on the Attack defense down low and Steve Fannell took exception to it. The Fannell challenge was answered by Green dropping the mitts and taking a swing before Fannell assumed the turtle position on the ground with both mitts firmly glued on. So the altercation resulted in a two-minute roughing minor for Green and a slow walk to the bench for Fannell.

But Wulder had an answer for it all and took a pass from Johnny Kilbride to score shorthanded. Then, nine seconds later, after seeing Josh score so much, Ryan Sanderson scooped up the ball and showed the world that more that one Sanderson has the touch around the net and scored unassisted to end the quarter.

The Roughnecks woke up, to a degree, in the fourth quarter. Things started off from the usual source, as Wulder potted his fourth of the afternoon. He was followed by a breakaway Adam Bysouth tally at the three-minute mark exactly. Then Josh Sanderson smacked the stick of goalie Matt King and while his temper got the best of him, the referee used his better judgement and didn't tack on any extra minutes for the trail of words directed his way. With one Sanderson in the box and two more on the floor, it was Chris Panos taking the cross-crease feed from Wulder and scoring the power play goal to make it a 10-6 affair.

That was as close as the Roughnecks would get, however, as Mike continued his goal-a-quarter pace and scored at the 6:41 mark of the final quarter. Phillips did his part to get the troops rolling again but they never regained the steam they were building before the Regan goal, and try as they might with sixth attacks on the floor, they couldn't get another one past Rob Blasdell. Jim Moss was the opportunist at the other end, scoring an empty netter with King desparately trying to dash back to his goal in full gear.

Josh Sanderson finished the night with eight points (three goals, five assists) for the Attack, while Jason Wulder replied with six points (four goals, two assists) to lead the Roughies. Matt King took the loss, falling to 4-6 on the season, while Rob Blasdell improved his record to 5-2 with the win.
