Ravens sweep Big Apple by topping Saints, 13-7

Chris Gill scores seven goals in Vancouver victory

The Vancouver Ravens came into the Nassau Coliseum on Saturday night, and, on the strength of five-goal first and fourth periods, defeated the New York Saints 13-7.

The real star of the game, however, was former Saints goaltender Dwight Maetche, who made 61 saves and allowed a paltry seven goals.

New York has now lost five consecutive games, after starting the season on such a promising note, at 4-2 as recently as four weeks ago.

Gee Nash, the Saints' regular goalkeeper, was inserted into the game after surprise starter Clayton Bergie had given up the first four goals of the game to the Ravens. Nash showed flashes of his ability during the second and third periods, when the Saints slowly closed the gap.

By the early fourth quarter, New York has inched to within one goal, at 8-7, on final-stanza tallies by Gavin Prout, Jonas Derks, and Ramar Clash.

However, after a goal by Chris Gill put Vancouver up by two again, at 9-7, the Saints' spirit appeared to sag and Nash gave up four additional consecutive goals to end the game, the first two of which also came from Gill.

Vancouver was paced by Gill's scoring outburst; the former Toronto Rock standout finished with seven goals, the best single-game total in the Ravens' brief history (Peter Morgan scored five against New Jersey in December, and Gill matched that number a week ago against Ottawa).

For New York, it's an entirely different story -- only Derks managed multiple goals, finishing with two. Roy Colsey, Prout, Rusty Kruger, and Kris Bryde -- the Saints' top four goal scorers this season -- were held to a goal apiece.

Vancouver finishes its New York metro area road swing 2-0, including a 13-8 triumph Friday night over the New Jersey Storm.

The two teams complete the home-and-home series this coming Saturday at General Motors Place in Vancouver.
