Wings drop another game, losing 15-14 in overtimeEx-Wing Schindler scores in sudden death for 'Shark winGeorge Bruck Outsider's Guide Game Correspondent The Philadelphia Wings dropped their third game in a row Saturday night, losing at home to the visiting Columbus Landsharks, 15-14, on former Wing Gewas Schindler's overtime goal. The loss drops the Wings' record to 5-6, leaving doubts that they can successfully defend their NLL championship. The second year Landsharks improved their record to 5-7, taking advantage of several Wings miscues and a couple of own goals by Philadelphia goalie Chris Sanderson en route to their stunning victory. The Philadelphia crowd of 13,726 was quieted early by the Landsharks as Ryan Stopper and Barrett Church recorded the first two goals of the game, keeping the Wings off the board until Tom Marechek tallied his first goal at the 10:52 mark. Stopper answered soon after to complete the Landshark scoring in the period, and the Wings were unable to find the net again in the quarter. The second stanza began on an upnote for the Wings, with Kevin Finneran blasting a shot past Columbus goalie Mike Miron just thirty-two seconds into the quarter. Mark Millon took advantage of the Wings power play opportunity twenty seconds later to even the score at three apiece, but Sanderson dropped a ball into his own net moments after making a save on Kyle Arbuckle, to give the lead back to the Landsharks. The Wings owned the second period, however. Millon scored the next two goals to complete his first-half hat trick and Jeff Ratcliffe teamed up with Tom Marechek for two more before Columbus' Cory Kahoun was able to find the net nearly ten minutes into the period. The next score was awarded to Church when Sanderson again dropped the ball into his own goal. As he prepared to pass the ball on to a teammate, it just dropped out of the pocket and trickled over the goal line, prompting a chorus of "We want Dallas" from the crowd. Marechek rounded out the scoring for the Wings, completing his hat trick on the power play, and Columbus' Spencer Martin -- brother of Philadelphia's defenseman Andrew Martin -- tucked one in to make the halftime score 8-7 in favor of the Wings. Third period action was again dominated by the Wings, although with less scoring. After leading off with a goal from Arbuckle, Columbus was unable to find rope again. The Wings managed three more tallies in the stanza, Marechek netting his fourth, and Ratcliffe and Finneran chipped in their second goals of the game. Finneran's power play goal put the Wings up 11-8 at the end of the third period of play, and the momentum seemed clearly in the Wings' favor. It all came apart for the Wings in the fourth. Columbus scored first from Arbuckle less than a minute into play, followed by Kahoun's second of the evening. Tom Ryan scored to give the Wings a two-goal cushion, but a power play goal by Mark Steenhuis and two successive goals by Kasey Biernes put the Landsharks ahead with four minutes remaining in the contest. Finneran and Ratcliffe each completed their hat tricks to again put the Wings in front, but Columbus' Derek Suddons again knotted the score with just 3:03 remaining in regulation. Overtime was forced when an apparent Wings goal was waved off for a Columbus time out with only four seconds remaining on the clock, the score even at fourteen. Overtime was a fast and wild affair, with the Wings managing eight shots to the Landsharks' five. It was Columbus, though, which came out on top when Schindler found rope with less than forty seconds to go in the first overtime. The Landsharks head home to host the Montreal Express on Saturday, 2 March, beginning a three game homestand. The Wings host the Ottawa Rebel at the First Union Center on Saturday, 2 March.
