Kilgour's debut is a winner - Bandits in OTBuffalo rallies to 11-10 win in former star's first game as coachDeb McAllister Outsider's Guide Assistant Editor Aime Caines scored 57 seconds into overtime as the Buffalo Bandits opened their season with an 11-10 victory over the Albany Attack Saturday evening at HSBC Arena. A franchise-low crowd of 5,713 was on hand for former Bandits star Darris Kilgour's first game as head coach of the team. The Attack came off the bench shooting, and scored the first goal of the game just nineteen seconds after the opening whistle. Dan Teat took a pass from Gary Rosyski and put it between Bandit netminder Steve Dietrich’s legs. Albany also was charged with the first penalty of the game when Teat was sent to the box for holding; at the same time, they were charged with a bench minor for too many men on the floor. Down two men, Albany’s defense managed to force a 30-second violation by the Bandits, and Phil Sanderson found the back of the net off a pass from Josh Sanderson, giving the Attack a 2-0 lead with twelve minutes to play in the first quarter. Rob Blasdell stopped shots by Kerry Susheski, John Tavares and Jason Crosbie before Crosbie finally beat him to put Buffalo on the scoreboard. The Attack increased its lead to 4-1 on goals from Teat and Rosyski before Pat McCready would score a pair to narrow Albany’s lead to 4-3 going into the second period of play. The second stanza began a fight between Albany’s Brock Robertson and Buffalo’s Jonas Derks. Both players were send off for five minutes, during which Jamie Grimoldby added a goal for the Attack two minutes later and Mike Regan took advantage of a Tavares penalty (holding) to make it 6-3 in favor of the Attack. McCready finished off his hat trick and Rich Kilgour brought the Bandits back to within a goal, at 6-5. Josh Sanderson netted his first of the night, and Teat scored his third, another shorthanded goal, as the Attack took an 8-5 lead to the locker room. Buffalo began the second half shorthanded following a second-quarter cross-checking penalty to Craig Gelsvik. After killing a minute and a half of five-on-four play, Tavares opened the third quarter scoring with his first goal of the night, but Rosyski quickly got that back for the Attack. Derks added a pair of goals, bringing the Bandits to within one goal, and Crosbie tied the game at nine with his second goal of the night, a minute before the quarter ended. Susheski gave the Bandits their first lead of the evening at 10-9 with nine minutes to play, but Regan managed to tie the game at ten with five minutes left to play, when he beat Dietrich over the shoulder. Two potential game-winning goals for the Bandits were waved off late in regulation, due to crease violations, giving the fans some bonus lacrosse in the home opener. Jim Moss won the opening faceoff of overtime for Albany, but the Attack never got a shot off. Caines grabbed a loose ball for Buffalo and the ball ended up in Derks' stick. While Blasdell made the save on Derks' shot, Accursi snatched the rebound and passed it back to Caines, who deftly put the ball over Blasdell’s shoulder and into the net.
