Rebel rallies to beat Mammoth, 13-11

Clark scores six as Ottawa wins two straight for first time

The Ottawa Rebel created its first-ever winning streak by defeating the Colorado Mammoth, 13-11, Saturday evening at the Ottawa Civic Centre.

The comeback win also is the Rebel's first at home since moving downtown (from the suburban Corel Centre) late last season.

It was not an easy win for Ottawa, as the Rebel started out looking nervous, missing passes and dropping balls in the first ten minutes. The result -- an early 3-0 Mammoth lead, on goals by Kevin Stewardson, Del Halladay and Ted Dowling.

Jason Clark put the Rebel on the scoreboard on a power play goal at 13:29 of the quarter, his first of six in the game. The celebration was short-lived, though, as Josh Sims of the Mammoth scored just eighteen seconds later.

Keeping the fireworks going, Bruce Codd got the Rebel back to within two goals just fifteen seconds after the Sims goal. The outburst, three goals in 34 seconds, set the tone for the rest of the game. Colorado led, 4-2, at the end of the quarter but the Rebel led in shot on goal, 16-13, many when it had a two-man advantage.

The second quarter was much like the first, in that the teams played five minutes before Kevin Dostie scored on a three-way passing play. Howard then scored a power play goal five minutes later to tie the game at four. Tom Phair got the Mammoth back in the lead with 3:19 to go, on passes from Halladay and Stewardson. That finished the half with the Mammoth ahead, 5-4.

The Rebel won the third quarter, 4-3, with Clark netting another two goals. The quarter was marked by a pair of great goals. First, Ottawa goaltender Matt Disher saw Jamie Roy come off the bench and fired a long bomb pass that Roy caught on the breakaway, then fired past Erik Miller.

Later in the period, Colorado's Gary Gait had the ball at the boards near his bench, with teammate Ted Dowling about fifteen feet to his left and Halladay another fifteen feet left, at about mid-floor. Time was running, nobody was moving, and Gait, Halladay and Dowling were talking to each other. Gait fired a hard pass to Halladay as Dowling broke for the net. Halladay fired the ball to Dowling, who was in full stride thirty feet in front of Disher. Dowling took the pass, fought through several Rebel defenders, shot and scored. Score after three quarters: 8-8.

Matt Giles and Clark scored early in the fourth, but Dowling was there to reply, just 25 seconds later. Ottawa then went two men down when Stephen Evans and Howard both went off for roughing. Del Halladay and Al Truant wasted little time in scoring, and the Mammoth took an 11-10 lead with eleven minutes to play.

Clark replied unassisted sixteen seconds later to tie the game again, then scored the winner about three minutes after that. Roy soon scored an insurance goal with Steven Evans in the penalty box, taking another bomb from Disher, sidestepping defender Matt Oglesby, and sticking the ball behind Miller on a beautiful behind-the-back shot.

Both goaltenders played wonderfully in the game. Disher turned away 38 of 49 Colorado shots, while Miller made 40 saves on 53 shots.

Credit the fans in this game -- nobody left this game early. They stayed to the final buzzer and were on their feet for the last few minutes of exciting play.
