Without Kelusky, Roughies lose to Rock, 13-10Toth scores five in absence of Calgary captainKent Ridley Outsider's Guide Game Correspondent Kaleb Toth scored five goals, but it wasn't enough for the Calgary Roughnecks to defeat the Toronto Rock in Friday night action at the Pengrowth Saddledome, falling 13-10. The game had all the elements of a great divisional matchup -- two good teams, a decent-sized crowd and a renewed meaning for the game. There also was the matter of the inverted standings -- the Roughnecks, 4-12 a year ago, were sitting in first place in the Northern Division, while the perennial contender Rock was looking up from the cellar. Calgary entered the game riding a two-game winning streak, needing only to win tonight to tie the team record for consecutive wins. Toronto, meanwhile, had lost back-to-back games for the first time since moving from Hamilton in 1999. Things started out with two tight-checking defenses going to work and it took over six minutes before the ball first hit twine. During those opening six minutes, Calgary's defense weathered several long possessions by the Rock. The Toronto attackers were able to corral rebounds and get new thirty-second clocks to work with. Kyle Goundrey drew first blood for the Roughnecks, but it only took 71 seconds for Colin Doyle to tie things up. The Doyle goal came following a huge save by Anthony Cosmo, and when the Toronto Rock offense set up, they worked the ball to Doyle in the slot where he lost his defender and scored in close. At 10:01, local boy Jason Wulder put the Roughies on top, and Toth trickled a long outside shot past Cosmo, making the score 3-1. A Darryl Gibson shot, attempted as he came in from the left side of the floor, made its way to the far post and into the goal, ending the quarter's scoring just eleven seconds after the Toth marker. Calgary took a penalty just sixteen seconds into the second quarter, when Goundrey went off for slashing, but the Roughnecks killed it off, having more scoring chances during the two minutes than Toronto did. As the penalty expired, Calgary goaltender Curtis Palidwor hit Goundrey coming out of the sin bin, sending him in for his second goal of the night. Four minutes later, with two Roughies in the box, Steve Toll finished off a five-on-three. Then, the Rock really started to roll, as Tom Montour scored his first professional goal, followed by a pair from Sherwood Park, Alberta, native Blaine Manning, putting the Rock ahead, 6-4. The twelfth minute of the quarter was a rocking one. It started with Manning's second goal, then seven seconds later, Tyson Leies scored, following that up with his tradition climb up the glass. Before the minute ended, Montour potted his second of the night, ending the second quarter with the Rock on top, 7-5. The gap in shots on goal, 16-12 after one quarter, opened up in a huge way by intermission, as the eastern boys were outshooting the locals, 37-23. After the halftime pep talks, the Rock came out blazing. Aaron Wilson scored after only 23 seconds had ticked off the clock, and Toronto kept momentum long enough to kill off a Pat Coyle penalty (holding). However, Kaleb Toth soon stepped up to score two in a row, bringing the locals back to within one. The run was put to an end, however, by a penalty for having too many men on the floor. Manning took full advantage, scoring his hat trick goal while the Rock was up a man. A few minutes later, Cosmo took offense to a Roughneck player working near his crease and his Paul Bunyan impression got him two minutes in the box. The Roughies' power play has operated at a decent level this season, and Toth kept it there, scoring only twenty seconds after the call was made. That was as close as the Calgary comeback would get, closing the gap to 9-8 heading into the final quarter. Kevin Finneran, still looking strange wearing a Rock jersey, scored his first of the night, extending the lead back to two, then super rookie defenseman Pat Merrill tallied an unassisted goal. With less than ten minutes to play, that goal put the Rock up 11-8. Toth scored an amazing fifth time but again Toronto had an answer, this time in the form of a Toll breakaway goal. Twenty seconds later, Finneran scored. The flurry of goals ended with a Tyson Leies goal. In a span of little more than two minutes, four shots hit netting. Once the dust settled from that run the Toronto Rock took up a defensive stand, taking clock management to a new level while impatient fans filed out of their seats. Constantly, possession after possession, the Rock would wear down the thirty-second clock and toss the ball away with a tick or two left. No fast breaks here, as the Rock didn't push the ball when they had it and changed out their players before the change of possession occurred. Toth was named Game MVP with six points (five goals, one assist), a superb showing from the man who was forced to assume even more of the offensive load with captain Tracey Kelusky out with a broken jaw and cheekbone resulting from last weekend's infamous bar fight. Blaine Manning (three goals, three assists) and Kevin Finneran (two goals, two assists) led the Rock in scoring.
