Roughnecks score last seven goals for 14-11 win

Calgary posts furious rally to sweep weekend home-and-home

The Calgary Roughnecks scored the final seven goals of Sunday afternoon's game at General Motors Place, turning an 11-7 deficit into a 14-11 victory over the Vancouver Ravens.

Following Friday's 13-12 win at home, the Roughnecks swept the season series with Vancouver, a home-and-home set played this weekend between the young yet bitter rivals.

In a defensive standoff which perfectly reflected the game's unofficial title of "WLA All-Star Game" -- thanks to the great number of British Columbians playing today -- neither side scored in the first eight minutes of play.

However, just twenty seconds after the Ravens broke the stalemate on a Grant Hamilton goal, Calgary replied with a strike from Shawn Cable. Vancouver took a 2-1 lead on a Dan Stroup goal and the teams traded goals over the final three minutes for a 4-3 Ravens lead after one quarter.

Perhaps the quarter break rejuvenated the defenses, since nearly six minutes of the second period elapsed before anyone struck again. Bruce Alexander scored first, followed 45 seconds later by Darren Reisig, and the Ravens had a three-goal lead.

Not about to be left in the dust, Calgary scored twice in the last two minutes of the half (Lewis Ratcliff and Jason Wulder) and the teams went to intermission separated by just one goal. Ravens 6, Roughnecks 5.

Vancouver scored four goals, including two from Peter Morgan, and held Calgary to just two in the third quarter, taking a 10-7 lead to the final period in the search for a series split.

After Mike Law scored just 69 into the fourth quarter, that 1-1 weekend was looking more and more likely. And what a relief it would be to salvage a split, considering that the Ravens pasted Calgary last season by a combined score of 34-19. What went wrong this time around?

Well, these aren't the same Roughnecks as a year ago, and that's partly because these aren't the same Ravens. Jason Wulder, a Calgary native and original Roughie, was first to penetrate the wall that was Vancouver goalie Dwight Maetche. Twenty-five seconds later, former Raven Craig Stevenson narrowed the gap to two.

Tracey Kelusky, the first pick in last summer's dispersal draft, scored the next two, tying the game at eleven with more than seven minutes to play. Calgary had not only stolen momentum, it was rolling like a boulder down a steep hill.

Thanks for playing, Ravens. We've got some nice parting gifts for you in the back.

Yes, Vancouver kept the game all square for another four minutes, producing a level of tension rarely seen in NLL regular-season play, but once the Roughnecks broke through, the game, for all intents and purposes, was over.

Jesse Phillips took a pass from ex-Raven Tyson Leies and buried it past Maetche and 12:02, and Kaleb Toth roared into the offensive end of the floor to score again just ten seconds later.

Leies, who had three assists on the afternoon, failed to score a goal this afternoon, depriving us of the chance to see if he'd be bold enough to climb the glass in his former home arena.

Defenseman Brad MacArthur (another dispersal draft pickup) put the game out of reach in the last minute, scoring unassisted.

Wulder (three goals, one assist) led the victorious Roughnecks with four points. Chris Gill (three goals, two assists) had five points for the Ravens.
