Rock shuts out Wings in fourth quarter for 13-9 winDoyle, Toll, Wilson each score three goals for TorontoGeorge Bruck Outsider's Guide Game Correspondent One week after shutting out the Colorado Mammoth in the fourth quarter to secure a win, the Philadelphia Wings themselves failed to score in the final fifteen minutes of play Saturday night, as the Toronto Rock rolled over the Wings, 13-9, at the First Union Center, in an emotionally-charged physical game. The game marked the return of Kevin Finneran to Philadelphia. After a decade with the Wings, Finneran requested a trade to the Rock during the preseason. Not well-received by the crowd, Finneran scored one goal and assisted on two others in the contest, in which six Rock goals came on the power play. Philadelphia scored first in the game, but penalties quickly began to play a part, allowing Blaine Manning and Aaron Wilson to each tally a power play goal, one minute apart. Finneran scored the only other goal of the first stanza, giving the Rock a 3-1 advantage. The Wings struck first again in the second quarter, but were quickly answered by Colin Doyle. Philadelphia came alive after that, scoring the next three goals to take its first lead, 5-4. Toronto would have none of that, taking advantage of two more power plays and ending the first half up by one, 7-6. Philadelphia opened the second half of play by scoring the first two goals, reclaiming the lead while holding Toronto without a shot on goal for five minutes. Wilson tallied the first Rock goal of the third, but was answered quickly by Tom Ryan. Steve Toll brought the Rock even with a power play goal, rounding out the period's scoring at 9-9. Toronto took charge in the fourth quarter, outshooting the Wings, 13-6, and scoring all four goals in the period. The Wings were unable to resist the onslaught, but were still within striking distance with five minutes to go in the contest. The final minutes, however, proved the downfall for the Wings, as unusual bench moves and sloppy play resulted in two empty net goals for the Rock. "I'm concerned over the fact that we had bad penalties," Wings coach Adam Mueller said. "We took horrible penalties. That's not what you want to do. Anytime you play a team like this, you can't do that. We were a man down almost the whole final quarter. We were shorthanded and couldn't get our offense going. We played great except the penalties." The Wings travel to the Meadowlands to face the New Jersey Storm on Thursday, 6 February, and return home on Saturday, 8 February to host the Rochester Knighthawks. The Rock returns home to face the Ottawa Rebel on Friday, 7 February.
