Roughnecks rally to beat Landsharks, 11-7

Calgary scores eight goals after halftime

Shawn Cable scored three goals as the Calgary Roughnecks rallied to defeat the visiting Columbus Landsharks, 11-7, Friday night.

Another 10,000-plus crowd filed into the Saddledome to see the home town Roughnecks. This marked the third time these teams have met, with the home team winning both showdowns so far.

Shawn Cable got those 10,000-plus fans out of their seats, after six minutes of tight checking and solid Mike Miron goaltending with a goal, thanks to a Rob Kirkby pass. Dan Dawson had an answer for the 'Sharks, using his tall frame to shoot over the defender.

Just moments after the faceoff following the Dawson goal, Dawson and Scott Forbes took themselves off the floor with a series of decent slashes. The first quarter scoring was finished with those two goals and Columbus holding the advantage in shots, 10-9.

The Landshark run continued into the second quarter, as Edmonton native Jon Harasym opened things up and Dawson added to that only sixteen seconds later. Kyle Goundrey broke Columbus' run, taking a great pass from Jason Wulder and finding a hole in goaltender Mike Miron's armor. Pat Maddalena, though, used his speed to get in behind the Roughies defense and score to restore the two-goal lead.

Calgary's passing was vastly improved during this game and the next goal showed it to a tee. Jason Wulder started with the ball in the corner and found a crossing Craig Stevenson, who drew the defense over a step before flicking the pass on to Cable standing on the edge of the crease. Cable dropped it in behind an out-of-position Miron to finish the play.

The Landsharks didn't roll over, though, and in the final minute of the half, Billy Greer took off following a Miron save and received the long ball perfectly to place him in behind any Roughneck. Going one-on-one with Calgary goaltender Curtis Palidwor, Greer made his moves count and scored the fifth 'Shark goal -- the fourth of the quarter, on only seven shots.

Lately, the Roughnecks have been using their halftime for constructive purposes, and this game was no different. Things got rolling sixteen seconds into the half after Kirkby won the draw and the loose ball went to Jesse Phillips. Phillips was about to hold up and wait for the line change, but then he saw daylight and streaked to the net. Using a "Stroup Swoop," Phillips laid out across the crease, putting it in on the far side.

The third quarter was owned by the Roughnecks, something that was evident in the first 2:13. Calgary put three behind Miron in that time to take its first lead since the opening quarter. After Phillips, Stevenson scored on a passing play with Goundrey, then Cable scored his first NLL hat trick on a Palidwor pass.

The offense waited over ten minutes before another scoring play, as Lewis Ratcliff finished a trip up the floor that was caused by a wayward Miron pass. The long ball went straight to Tyson Leies, who quickly got things going the other direction. Leies found Toth on the left side, and Toth spotted Ratcliff hanging out around the crease, all alone. The final goal of the quarter came from Neil Doddridge, playing in his 101st NLL game.

The final quarter gave some drama to things, as Dawson came off the bench to score his hat trick goal in the first minute. However, the Roughnecks weren't going to let this one slip away and responded with goals from Leies and Kelusky.

When the game came down to the final two minutes of action Columbus switched goalies from the heavy-footed Mike Miron to the quicker Ken Montour, whose overplayed Doddridge on his first trip to the net, and in his rush, Montour knocked the net backwards, a move he never recovered from as Doddridge scored his second of the game. Quickly, the 'Sharks regrouped and mounted their comeback but Maddalena could only score once, making the final score 11-7 in favor of the home town squad.
