Bandits beat undermanned Saints, 16-10Blizzard forces New York to play short all gameDeb McAllister Outsider's Guide Assistant Editor In their second game in twenty-four hours, the Buffalo Bandits defeated the undermanned New York Saints, 16-10, Sunday afternoon in front of 6,631 fans at HSBC Arena. Jonas Derks opened with a bang, scoring three of the first four goals. The first was a power play strike off a pass from John Tavares, followed by an even strength tally assisted by Peter Tavares. About five minutes into the game, a scuffle broke out, resulting in five roughing penalties, three against the Bandits. However, Mark Steenhuis scored shorthanded to give the Bandits a 3-0 lead, and Derks made it 4-0 with his hat trick goal. Jason Crosbie finished out the first quarter, increasing the Bandits' lead to 5-0 going into the second quarter. John Tavares opened the scoring in the second stanza, but the Saints quickly cut the gap by scoring four straight goals, ending the Bandits' shutout streak at almost 32 minutes (reaching back to last night's game at Albany). Doug Shanahan netted the first New York goal, and former Bandit Chris Driscoll hit the next three. All of a sudden, the Saints were back in the game, trailing just 6-4. Crosbie netted his second of the afternoon less than a minute after Driscoll's third, and Rich Kilgour beat New York netminder Gord Nash to up the Bandits' lead to 8-4. The Saints kept on coming, though. Panos scooped up the rebound of a shot by Dan Paccione and put it past Corey Quinn, who was manning the Buffalo net in his first start of the season. Derks quickly got the Bandits' four-goal lead back, and Aime Caines increased it to five, at 10-5, with five minutes left to play before intermission. Driscoll and Panos scored late in the quarter, sandwiched around a Steenhuis score, making it 11-7 at halftime. Late in the first half, New York's Matt McFarland and Buffalo's Andy Ogilvie squared off near the center of the floor in a particularly brutal fight. The bout began when McFarland punched Ogilvie while they were struggling for a loose ball against the boards, and by the time they were done, Ogilvie's hand was broken and McFarland suffered what is believed to be a fractured skull. Neither player returned to the game. Of the four goals scored in the third quarter, three came from the Saints. Bryan Bendig, Panos and Culp brought the Saints to within a goal before Rich Kilgour scored his second of the night, putting the Bandits up 12-10. Quinn ended the game with a perfect fourth quarter, making nine saves, while Susheski, Derks, Kelly Sullivan and Peter Tavares finished the scoring. Derks paced the Bandits with five goals and an assist. Mark Steenhuis was the second-highest scorer with five points (two goals, three assists). Corey Quinn stopped 37 shots in this winning effort. Chris Driscoll led the Saints, with four goals and three assists. Gord Nash made 39 saves. New York played with as few as eleven runners at one point in the game. Gavin Prout, Matt Shearer and Jon Brothers were unable to leave Baltimore, where they live, due to this weekend's blizzard, and the Saints had no emergency players on hand. Throw in McFarland's injury, and New York was four men short until Josh Black could arrive in the second half.
