Ravens spoil Gait's homecoming, 14-9Vancouver keeps Mammoth winless on road this seasonShamus Outsider's Guide Game Correspondent Chris Gill and Chris Prat combined to score seven goals as the Vancouver Ravens defeated the Colorado Mammoth, 14-9, Sunday afternoon at General Motors Place. The Ravens hyped the game in part as a tribute to lacrosse legend and British Columbia native Gary Gait, the Mammoth's star player. The return of a Gait to B.C. (whether it's Gary or twin brother Paul, now retired) is always a special thing, and the hometown hero held up his end by scoring five goals. With both teams battling for a playoff spot, the game was made even more thrilling. Prat opened the scoring at 1:15, assisted by Dan Stroup and Cam Sedgwick. Three minutes later, Gill added to the Ravens' lead with a power play goal. The Mammoth then struck back with two fast goals, the second of which came from the guest of honor himself. The Ravens scored three more goals by the end of the quarter -- Gill, Matt Dwane and Stroup -- and the Ravens had a 5-2 lead. The game turned much chippier in the second quarter, with some pretty hard hits and a lot of penalties. A little cross-checking, a bit of holding, and a whole lot of roughing led to twenty minutes of penalties in the quarter (ten per team). Prat once again started the scoring, this time with an over-the-top righthand shot over Mammoth goaltender Erik Miller for a shorthanded goal. Less than two minutes later, Gill got his second of the night. However, Colorado refused just to roll over. Brian Langtry score a shorthander and Gait followed that up with a power play strike of his own. Stroup, Gill, and Prat kicked off the third quarter with three stright goals, making the score 10-4 and bringing all 5,640 people in attendance to their feet. The famous number 22 in maroon and silver scored another goal at the 6:37 mark, but the Ravens added a pair before the period was done. In the play of the night, Vancouver's Grant Hamilton showed his speed by blowing past Del Halladay for a breakaway and beating Miller on the lower right hand side. Mike Law scored in the final minute, to make it a 12-5 game. Early in the fourth quarter, Bruce Murray broke through two defenders along the boards and scored a shorthanded goal. Just a half-minute later, Gait scored his fourth of the game, followed quickly by Langtry. Ted Dowling scored at 7:05, and it was a game again, at 13-8. Mike Law scored with five minutes to play, putting away the Mammoth for good. Gait scored the last goal of the contest, with a mere 21 seconds to play. Prat (three goal, three assists) was named the Player of the Game, while Gill added four assists. Colorado was led by five goals and an assist from Gait.
