Saints send Riggers back to Calgary on sour noteShearer scores four goals and Nash stops 55 shots in New York's 10-9 winScott Neiss NLL.com The New York Saints broke a six-game losing streak, holding on for a 10-9 victory over the Calgary Roughnecks (7-6) at the Nassau Coliseum on Sunday afternoon. The loss is the second in twenty-four hours for Calgary, which fell to Philadelphia last night, 19-13. The Saints led the entire game, jumping out to an early 4-1 lead. Matt Shearer scored twice in the quarter, including one just 28 seconds after the opening faceoff, while Bryan Bendig recorded a shorthanded goal and two assists. New York kept the pressure on in the second quarter, as Gavin Prout and Shearer scored to put the Saints up 6-2, forcing Roughnecks goaltender Curtis Palidwor out of the game, as Matt King came in for relief between the pipes. Shearer scored again with three minutes to play in the first half, for a 7-4 lead at intermission. Calgary stayed in the game the entire way, but never challenged until the fourth quarter. Calgary pulled King for for an extra attacker for over two minutes down the stretch, and the tactic paid off as Kaleb Toth scored shorthanded, and Tyson Leies followed it up to cut the lead to a goal. The Saints had two chances to score on the open net in the final minute, but Doug Shanahan and Nicky Polanco each hit the post. Calgary had one final chance, but Gee Nash came up with three saves in the dying seconds to seal the victory. Nash was selected as Game MVP for his phenomenal performance, recording 55 saves and holding the Roughnecks to only nine goals. Matt Shearer led the Saints in scoring with four goals and an assist, while Chris Panos scored two goals, including the game-winner, and added two assists. Neil Doddridge led Calgary with a hat trick, while Kaleb Toth scored two goals and an assist. Kyle Goundrey had three assists for the Riggers. New York hosts the Columbus Landsharks next Friday at the Nassau Coliseum. Calgary will host the Ottawa Rebel a week from today.
