Iroquois shoots Scotland out of the barn, 19-12

In the first game of the tournament, the Iroquois Nationals defeated Scotland, 19-12, cranking an unbelievable 89 shots on goal.

Delby Powless led the way for the First Peoples, scoring five goals and dishing out four assists. The fourth of those goals came 4:44 into the fourth quarter, killing a Scottish rally.

The Iroquois went on to score six goals in the final period, five of them in the last five minutes, distancing themselves from what had become a 13-11 thriller.

Rochester Knighthawks sniper Cory Bomberry added three goals and four assists for the Iroquois, while brother Cam added two goals and an assist.

Blair Ferguson gave the Scots an early lead, but it was his only goal of the game and the lead flipped back and forth for a while. Powless scored a quick, late pair for a 6-3 lead and the Iroquois were on their way to a 10-6 advantage at halftime and a 13-8 lead after three quarters.

Dan Teat led the Scottish offense with four goals and four assists, while Jeff Hobbs added three goals and two assists.

Derek General took the win for the Iroquois Nationals, stopping 29 of 41 shots. Joe Bell suffered the loss, allowing 9 goals on 41 shots in relief of Derek Collins (10 goals, 36 saves).

The Iroquois Nationals meet Canada tomorrow evening at 7:30, while Scotland remains in the noon slot, facing off with the Czech Republic.

Team USA bounces Czechs in opener, 22-9

Chris Panos scored six goals Thursday afternoon, leading the United States to a 22-9 romp over the Czech Republic.

With most of the top American players lost to Major League Lacrosse, there were plenty of questions about just how good Team USA really was. Early on, the answer wasn't too positive, with the defense taking numerous penalties and allowing the Czechs to stay in contention.

Two power play goals early in the second quarter brought the Czech Republic to within two, at 6-4, but a five-goal run by the Yankees made it 11-4 at intermission.

The Americans brought more of the same firepower in the second half, scoring five times in the third quarter and tacking on six more in the fourth.

Panos jumped to the top of the early-tournament leaderboard, leading all players with six goals and tying Delby Powless of the Iroquois Nationals with nine points. Billy Curtis (4 goals, 3 assists) and Kevin Finneran (3 goals, 4 assists) each had seven points for Team USA.

Jakub Novacek led the Czech Republic with five points, on a goal and four assists. Pavel Dosly was close behind, scoring two goals and dishing out two assists.

Dwight Maetche (7 saves on just 11 shots) got the win, while Jiri Malina (26 saves on 42 shots) took the loss. American Jake Henhawk and Czech Jiri Pesek also saw action in goal.

Both teams return to action tomorrow, with the United States playing Australia at 4:00 PM and the Czechs facing Scotland at noon, in the only all-Europe game of round-robin play.

Host Canadians destroy Australia in nightcap

The host Canadians opened their five-game round-robin schedule in dramatic fashion Thursday night, opening a 15-2 halftime lead and waltzing home with a lopsided 28-5 decision over Australia in the final game of the day.

The Maple Leaf side began the game on fire, scoring five times on its opening eight possessions. Before the Australians knew what had hit them, they were down 7-1 after one period of play.

The second quarter was no kinder, as Canada scored eight more times for a 15-2 halftime lead.

The Australians made progress on offense in the third quarter, scoring three times, but Canada kept pounding away, bagging another nine goals despite calling off the dogs and passing up scoring chances.

The boys from Down Under held Canada to just four in the final quarter, but couldn't score one themselves, finishing the game 23 goals in the hole.

Seemingly half the Canadian team went nuts on offense -- eight runners had at least five points, led by a four-goal, seven-assist explosion from John Grant. Shawn Williams (6 goals, 3 assists) and Blaine Manning (1 goal, 8 assists) had nine points apiece for the Red and White.

Paul Kernaghan had two goals and an assist for Australia. Gordon Purdie, the only Aussie with NLL experience, recorded a goal and an assist.

As brutally lopsided as the game was, it could've been worse -- Kaleb Toth, Colin Doyle, and Dan Stroup all were healthy scratches.
