Scotland posts strong second half, beats USA

Scotland gave the United States its first loss of the tournament Sunday, posting a five-goal, third-quarter run to defeat the Yankees, 15-12, in the first game of the day.

Both teams are now 2-1 in pool play.

Scotland held a narrow 5-4 lead after one quarter, but the Americans battled back to tie the game at halftime, 8-8.

The United States scored the first two goals of the second half, but Scotland dominated the rest of the third quarter, scoring five goals in succession for a 13-10 lead.

Although Scotland never again surrendered the lead, the Americans fought to within a goal, at 13-12, before Jeff Hobbs scored the final two goals of the game.

As usual, however, Dan Teat was the high scorer for Scotland, bagging another four goals and four assists. His 12 goals and 22 points in the tournament lead all scorers.

Five players had two goals each for the United States, but Kevin Finneran added five assists to his pair, leading the Americans in scoring.

Joe Bell picked up the win, making 40 saves in a complete-game decision. Dwight Maetche also played the full sixty minutes, stopping 37 of 52 shots in defeat.

Scotland plays Canada tomorrow at 4:00 PM, while the United States draws the Iroquois Nationals at 7:30.

Iroquois Nationals knock Australia to 0-3

Neal and Delby Powless combined for eleven goals, leading the Iroquois Nationals to a 24-7 rout of Australia.

The Iroquois improve to 2-1. Australia falls to 0-3.

In playing its best game so far in the tournament, Australia stayed in contention most of the first half, finally stumbling in the last four minutes when the Iroquois stretched an 8-5 lead to 12-5.

After that, it was all downhill for the Aussies, who allowed five goals in the third quarter and another seven in the fourth.

Neal Powless (6 goals, 3 assists) and Cory Bomberry (1 goal, 8 assists) each recorded nine points for the Iroquois, trailed closely on the stat sheet by Kim Squire (3 goals, 5 assists) and Delby Powless (5 goals, 2 assists).

Travis Croll was the lone bright spot on offense for Australia, scoring three goals and dishing out an assist.

Ken Montour, starting in goal in place of Derek General, made 25 saves for the win. Aaron Machner took the loss, yielding 19 goals on 32 shots.

Australia plays the Czech Republic tomorrow at noon, in a matchup of the final two winless teams in the tournament. The Iroquois Nationals meet Team USA tomorrow at 7:30 PM.

Canada crushes overmatched Czechs, 25-1

In the final game of the day, Canada trounced the Czech Republic, 25-1, holding the Europeans scoreless until well into the second quarter.

Curt Malawsky led the beating with six goals, while the Toronto Rock combination of Bob Watson and Anthony Cosmo was nearly perfect in goal.

Canada burst to a 10-0 lead after one quarter, then lightened up on its overmatched foe. However, the Maple Leafs scored another three goals before the Czech Republic got on the board with a Pavel Dosly strike.

Canada added two more goals before intermission, then strung up another four in the third quarter, for a ridiculous 19-1 lead.

In addition to Malawsky (6 goals, 2 assists), John Tavares also recorded eight points (3 goals, 5 assists) for the Canadians.

Cosmo earned the win by stopping eight of nine Czech shots, while the man he backs up in Toronto, Watson, was perfect in relief (eleven shots, eleven saves). Jiri Malina went the distance in the loss, making 26 saves.
