A rundown of the action during Day Five of the World Indoor Lacrosse Championship, held Wednesday at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium in Kitchener, Ontario.

Scotland claims final spot by topping Australia

Dan Teat kick-started a three-goal shorthanded run in the first quarter, helping Scotland to zoom past Australia and into the semifinals, 16-10.

Late in the first quarter, Scottish forward Jeff Hobbs was sent off for interference, but Teat, Terry Dennett, and Darryl Gibson scored 52 seconds apart in the man-down situation, flipping an early Australian lead into a 6-4 Scotland advantage.

Scotland stretched its lead to 9-5 at halftime, and Australia never again got close enough to challenge.

Teat led all scorers with four goals and two assists, while Blair Ferguson chipped two goals and two assists. Tim Dickson (2 goals, 2 assists) and Gordon Purdie (4 assists) had four points each for Australia.

Joe Bell played most of the game in goal for Scotland, making 31 saves on 38 shots. Derek Collins also appeared, stopping nine of twelve shots. Wilbur Costa went the distance for Australia, recording 20 saves and 16 goals allowed.

The Scots, who finish round-robin play at 3-2, will play the Iroquois Nationals in tomorrow's second semifinal (7:30 PM). The Australians, now 1-4, were relegated to the consolation final tomorrow at noon, against the Czech Republic.

As a result of this game, the other semifinal matchup is set -- United States vs. Canada, at 4:00 PM. They meet tonight, too, in the final preliminary round game of the tournament.

Iroquois Nationals burn Czechs twice over, 23-4

The Iroquois Nationals cranked up its offense in the bookend quarters, outscoring the Czech Republic 18-0 in the first and fourth quarters of a 23-4 romp.

The Nationals finish round-robin play 4-1, and will play Scotland tomorrow evening in a semifinal. The Czechs fall to 0-5, and will meet Australia in the consolation final tomorrow at noon.

Kim Squire scored just 23 seconds into the game, opening the floodgates for a 10-0 Iroquois lead after one quarter.

The Nationals added one more to open the second period before Pavel Dosly finally found the back of the net.

The Czech Republic played reasonably well through the middle quarters, holding the Iroquois to just four more goals before halftime and closing back within eleven, at 15-4, with fifteen minutes to play.

However, the Nats came out firing in the fourth quarter, netting eight more goals while holding the Czechs scoreless at their own end of the floor.

Squire scored four goals, joined in the hat trick club by Neal Powless, Mark Burnam, and Tom Montour. Dosly, Jakub Novacek, Simom Vit, and Martin Bouzek each struck once for the Czechs.

Milan Tulacek took the loss, allowing 14 goals on just 29 shots. Jiri Pesek also saw action for the Czechs. Ken Montour and Derek General split the goaltending duties for the Nationals.

Canada perfect after beating Team USA, 16-5

Led by four goals from Colin Doyle, Canada closed out the preliminary round by routing the United States, 16-5, Wednesday evening.

The teams, which finish 5-0 and 2-3, respectively, meet again Thursday afternoon in the first semifinal.

The Americans brought in Jeremy Hollenbeck, Mike Law, and Brian Tower for their first appearances of the tournament, in the hopes that some fresh legs might end the team's two-game slide.

No such luck, as Canada scored all three goals of the first quarter and took a 7-2 lead into the locker room.

Although the Americans kept battling to get back into the game, the Maple Leaf side continued to stretch its lead, carrying an 11-4 advantage into the fourth quarter.

In the final minute of play, Canadian defenseman Jim Moss was hit from behind and stayed on the turf for three minutes before departing. His status for the semifinal rematch is unknown.

Curt Malawsky led all scorers with seven points (3 goals, 4 assists) for Canada, while Kevin Finneran and Mike Ladouceur each produced a goal and an assist for the Americans.

Bob Watson picked up the win, making 20 first-half saves before yielding to Pat O'Toole. Dwight Maetche suffered the loss, allowing twelve goals on 41 shots. Jake Henhawk also saw playing time for the Americans.
