Australians claim fifth place by doubling up Czechs

Travis Croll scored five goals as Australia unloaded on the Czech Republic, 21-10, to win the consolation final.

The Australians head home with a 2-4 record, posting both victories against the 0-6 Czechs.

The win didn't come easy for the folks from Down Under, though. Leading 2-0 in the first quarter, Australia committed a number of penalties, allowing the Czechs to win the opening period, 4-2.

The Australians rallied to claim a narrow 6-5 halftime lead, then exploded in the second half, scoring nine goals in the third quarter and six more in the fourth.

Tim Fry led all scorers with ten points, tallying four goals and six assists for Australia. Miroslav Knotek led the way for the Czech Republic, with a goal and three assists.

Aaron Machner tended goal most of the game for Australia, stopping 28 of 35 shots. Wilbur Costa also saw action. At the other end, Jiri Malina and Milan Tulacek split the duties.

Canada cruises into championship game

Canada coasted into Saturday's gold medal game by defeating the United States, 17-9, in the first semifinal played Thursday afternoon.

The Maple Leafs improve to 6-0, while the Americans tumble to 2-4. This was the second meeting in less than 24 hours between these border rivals, following Wednesday's 16-5 contest.

Team USA took a quick 1-0 lead -- the only time Canada has trailed in the tournament -- when Dan Marohl struck for the Red, White and Blue. It didn't last, though, as Tracey Kelusky tied the game three minutes later.

That kicked off a long Canadian run, stretching deep into the second quarter. The Maple Leafs led 4-1 after one quarter and 9-2 at halftime.

The Americans fought valiantly to get back into the game, scoring seven times in the second half, but couldn't cut the deficit.

Kaleb Toth and John Grant scored four goals each for Canada, and Colin Doyle was the master playmaker, dishing out six assists. Marohl led the Americans in scoring, recording four points (3 goals, 1 assist).

Bob Watson picked up the win in goal, stopping 10 of 12 first-half shots before Anthony Cosmo took over. Dwight Maetche suffered the loss, allowing 14 goals on 44 shots.

Canada awaits the winner of tonight's Scotland-Iroquois game. The United States will play the loser of that game for the bronze medal.

Iroquois Nationals get to final by pounding Scots

The Iroquois Nationals dominated the middle quarters, breaking out of an early tie to handily defeat Scotland, 22-8, Thursday evening.

The Nats advance to the gold medal game Saturday afternoon, where they'll meet unbeaten Canada. Scotland faces the United States in the third-place game Saturday morning.

Scotland grabbed the early lead, up 3-1 until late in the first quarter when a quick pair by the Iroquois tied the game at three.

The Nationals all but eliminated Scotland from the gold rush via a 7-0 second quarter, then sealed the deal by scoring another seven in the third.

Cam Bomberry and Delby Powless each scored five goals and three assists, leading all scorers with eight points. Rob Taylor (3 goals, 1 assist) and Kyle Arbuckle (2 goals, 2 assists) recorded four points apiece for the Scots.

Derek General picked up the win, making seventeen saves in three quarters of work. Derek Collins suffered the loss, allowing all but five of the Iroquois' goals.
