Sting wins opener in desert duel, 16-12Maddalena, Beirnes score four goals each as Arizona beats VancouverR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Pat Maddalena and Kasey Beirnes scored four goals each Friday night, helping the Arizona Sting to a 16-12 victory over the Vancouver Ravens. Craig Conn and Dan Stroup had three goals each in a losing cause. The contest was the National Lacrosse League season opener, as well as the Sting's first game in Arizona and the first-ever event at Glendale Arena. The crowd of 12,789 -- good for a team's first-ever home game, but not quite as large as the Sting would've liked -- was treated to immediate fireworks, with Maddalena scoring the first goal just 49 seconds after the opening faceoff. Peter Morgan and Dan Stroup combined to give the Ravens a 2-1 lead, but the Sting countered with goals from Beirnes and Gewas Schindler a few minutes later. A Stroup goal ended the first quarter at 3-3, and the Ravens spent much of the second period taking a lead and handing it back to Arizona. Not until Beirnes scored a power play marker at 10:05 did the Sting claim the lead again, at 7-6, and a Bomberry goal inside of 90 seconds to play made it 8-7 at intermission. Six minutes into the third quarter, Beirnes struck again, followed forty seconds later by Maddalena. Although Stroup and Chris Gill soon brought the Ravens to within one again, at 10-9, Arizona never relinquished the lead in the second half. An fourth-quarter even-strength goal by Dan Dawson and another man-up strike by Bomberry three minutes later put the game out of reach, and a Bill Greer empty-netter at 12:26 sealed the deal. Conn, the fourth-overall selection in this year's entry draft, scored Vancouver's final three goals. Number-one pick Mark Miyashita won nineteen of 30 faceoffs and recorded one assist. Arizona, ironically enough, did not dress any first-year players, despite having one of the youngest teams in the league the past few years. Mike Miron picked up the win, stopping 49 of 61 Vancouver shots. The ageless Dwight Maetche suffered the loss, making just 29 saves on 45 shots.
