Ravens end season on winning noteVancouver salvages split of home-and-home series, 13-10R.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief The Vancouver Ravens finished a lackluster 5-11 season with a victory Sunday afternoon, defeating the Arizona Sting, 13-10, at General Motors Place. Arizona, which defeated the Ravens last night at Glendale Arena, is 7-8 with one game remaining (Saturday at San Jose). Neither the Sting nor the Ravens will qualify for the postseason. Vancouver built a 4-1 lead after one quarter, striking three times late in the period after Matt Dwane swapped a goal with Arizona's Cory Bomberry. Dan Stroup started the run at 11:41, followed by Chris Gill a minute later and Chris Prat two minutes after that. The Ravens stretched their lead to 5-1 early in the second quarter, a Peter Morgan shorthander, but Dan Dawson took the goal back at 6:45. Unfazed, Vancouver posted another three-goal, quarter-ending run -- Cam Sedgwick, Morgan, and Curt Malawsky -- spanning the final six minutes of the half. Ravens 8, Sting 2. The Scorpions erased half of that six-goal deficit in the third quarter, with Gewas Schindler scoring three times by himself (Kasey Beirnes and Bomberry also scored). Three of Arizona's five goals in the quarter -- as well as both of Vancouver's -- came in a wild four-minute stretch near the end of the period. Pat Maddalena scored twice for Arizona in the opening five minutes of the fourth quarter, but Malawsky and Stroup struck in the meantime, and the Sting couldn't gain any momentum. Stroup and Sean Pollock exchanged goals in the closing minutes. Beirnes led all scorers with six points, on a goal and five assists. Dan Stroup and Curt Malawsky each posted four points for the Ravens (three goals, one assist each). Game MVP Dwight Maetche had 33 saves and two assists in picking up his fifth win of the season. Mike Miron suffered the loss, allowing all but one Raven goal; he finished with 32 saves.
