Regan's breakaway goal wins OT thrillerStealth rallies past Roughnecks, 14-13; playoff rematch aheadRob Miles Outsider's Guide Game Correspondent Mike Regan's penchant for making the big play reared itself again Saturday night, as the Albany, NY, native drove a bullet past Curtis Palidwor to give the Stealth a 14-13 overtime victory over the Calgary Roughnecks in front of a small yet raucous crowd at HP Pavilion. The victory assured San Jose of second place in the NLL's Western Division, allowing the Stealth to host the first round rematch between these two teams in two weeks. The win also knocks the hard-charging Arizona Sting out of playoff contention. The Stealth opened up the game quickly with a Dan Teat (two goals, two assists) one-timer off of bang-bang passes from Gary Rosyski and Cam Woods. Tracey Kelusky (three goals, two assists) answered back with a close-in bullet from second-year player Lewis Ratcliff. Both teams spent the majority of the first period trading goals before San Jose forged a 5-3 lead as both Kelusky and Mike Regan gave the 4,864 fans in a attendance a preview of things to come. After a quick transition goal from Kelusky off a Palidwor outlet pass to start the second period, the Stealth unveiled their own transition game with Jim Moss scoring the first of his two fast break goals. San Jose went on to dominate the remainder of the first half, going to intermission with a 9-6 lead. The Roughnecks opened the third period with a flurry of goals, by Jason Wulder (two goals, one assist), Tyson Leies (two goals), Kelusky, and Ratcliff (two goals, four assists) to tie the game at 10-10. That drove Stealth goalie Rob Blasdell (23 saves, ten goals allowed) from the game for Brandon Miller (fourteen saves, three goals allowed) at 10:35. The rest of the period was showcased by stellar defense at both ends as San Jose killed off two power play opportunities while Curtis Palidwor (45 saves, fourteen goals allowed) single-handedly held the Stealth scoreless for thirteen minutes. Calgary forged a 12-10 lead on goals by Ted Dowling (four goals, three assists) and Ratcliff with 10:03 left to play, setting the stage for a some of the most exciting lacrosse to be played all season. After McBride took a questionable roughing penalty for the Roughnecks, Rusty Kruger scored off a give-and-go pass from Josh Sanderson. Sanderson then showed his propensity for playing big, scoring on a rocket shot to tie the game at 12-12. San Jose regained the lead on a fast break goal by Chris White, initiated by a huge, jarring hit by Jim Moss and a gorgeous no-look pass by Cam Woods. Dowling tied the game again at 13-13 with a nice over the shoulder shot past a sprawling Miller with 3:57 left to play in regulation. Both teams then played flawless defense, preventing either offensive from getting into any sort of flow. Overtime was all San Jose as the Stealth won the faceoff and kept pressure on the Roughnecks throughout. Calgary had gained possession after Regan had missed on a hard angle charge and initiated their transition with McBride running the ball up the north sideline, hawked closely by Josh Sanderson. Although the Roughnecks held a one-man advantage, they never had the chance to take advantage as Sanderson intercepted an errant pass and launched a pass downfield to Regan, who, in turn, beat Palidwor one-on-one with a charging shot over the Calgary goalie's stick shoulder. NOTES: Although there were only 4,864 in attendance, it was one of the loudest crowds at the arena all season... The game-winner was Regan's second big-game winner at this arena -- he had given San Jose a win in its home opener on a last-second shot against Colorado... This victory gives the Stealth a 6-1 record at home; it can close out the season 7-1 with a victory over Arizona next week... The goal by Chris White was his first-ever career goal in the NLL... Post-game, I had the opportunity to meet the new additions to the Stealth roster, Josh Bergey and Darren Reisig. While it doesn't look as though Bergey will see any action this season, I've been advised that he will be making an impact with the Stealth next season. Darren Reisig wasn't sure what he was going to do when he was notified of the trade, but is happy to be playing in San Jose with "a great bunch of guys."
