John Grant scored five goals and Pat O'Toole had a strong outing in goal as Canada defeated the United States, 17-8, Saturday evening to win the Heritage Cup at Pepsi Center in Denver.

Grant led the Maple Leaf rout by scoring in every quarter, while O'Toole stopped 37 of 45 American shots on goal.

Team Canada poses with the Heritage Cup after its 17-8 victory.

Ultimately, the Canadians were propelled to victory in almost the exact same manner by which they were shocked by the Americans two years ago -- with a back-breaking first-quarter run.

Peter Lough put Canada on the board just 90 seconds in, with Tracey Kelusky following suit two minutes later.

By the time Team USA finally got on the board (a Mike Regan goal at 13:10), Colin Doyle and Gary Gait had also scored.

Tack on two last-minute goals (Grant and Gait), and Canada was rocking at the end of the first quarter, 6-1.

"I think when you have a lot of offensive threats, you want to shoot your shots," Kelusky told the Denver Post. "Our coaches prepared us well. We came out and used our firepower."

Dave Stilley and Kevin Finneran trimmed Canada's lead early in the second quarter, but the Americans slipped back into a five-goal deficit by halftime, 9-4.

Try as it might, Team USA could develop little traction after the break, trading goals with Canada throughout the third quarter. Only a Jake Bergey goal at 14:13 allowed the Americans to gain any ground at all.

But it mattered little. Kaleb Toth and John Tavares scored early in the fourth quarter for the Maple Leafs, who pitched a shutout while tacking on five goals in all.

Grant's seven points (five goals, two assists) led all scorers, followed closely by six from Kelusky (three goals, three assists) and five apiece from Gait (three goals, two assists) and Doyle (two goals, three assists).

Bergey, coming off a subpar season for the Philadelphia Wings, was the only American to score more than once, and his three points were the most by any Yankee.

NOTES:

All nine Americans who play for the host Colorado Mammoth saw playing time tonight, with five recording a point. On the opposite side, only Gait did much among the wintertime Mammoth players. Gavin Prout was held without a point for Team Canada, and goaltender Gord Nash didn't even play.

This was Canada's first Heritage Cup win. In the only previous Heritage game, held in October 2002 in Mississauga, Ontario, the United States posted a 21-16 victory.

Les Bartley, recently promoted to vice president of the Toronto Rock, was behind the bench for the first time since taking a leave of absence from the Rock a year ago to combat colon cancer. Bartley, head coach of the Canadian team, appeared to be in good health.

Attendance was announced as 11,573, but (unlike most Mammoth games) many fans departed early as the game got increasingly out of hand.
