Anaheim storms to victory over Wings, 13-10

Derek Keenan victorious in NLL head coaching debut

A Storm of the non-weather variety made its way to Southern California Saturday evening and caused all sorts of problems for the Philadelphia Wings.

Led by a Shawn Cable hat trick and 29 saves by Matt Roik, the new-look Anaheim Storm used a 9-3 second half to defeat the Wings, 13-10, at Arrowhead Pond.

A crowd of 5,732 was on hand for Anaheim’s season opener, which also happened to be Derek Keenan's debut as head coach of the Storm.

Playing their second game in as many nights, the Wings fell behind early on a goal by Ryan Powell, but took the lead on goals by Keith Cromwell and Storm forward Bryan Bendig -- only to see Scott Stewart tie the game at two moments later.

However, the Wings made it a 6-2 game three and a half minutes into the second quarter, with the first-ever NLL goals for Andrew Burkholder and Dan Finck included in the four-goal run.

Anaheim scored the next two goals and seemed to be gaining momentum until Marc Morley (another former Storm player) scored shorthanded with two seconds remaining in the half, giving the Wings a 7-4 lead. All looked good for a Wings weekend sweep.

Just one problem -- the second half still had to be played.

Much like the night before in Arizona, the Wings were sluggish in the third quarter, being held scoreless in the period while allowing four Storm goals (Cable, Raweras Mitchell, Ryan Powell and Casey Powell) to give Anaheim an 8-7 lead after three quarters.

Cable added another goal 34 seconds into the fourth quarter before Ryan Ward ended a scoreless streak of nearly eighteen minutes. That wasn’t enough to wake a slumbering Philly offense and the Storm would pretty much ice the game with three more scores.

The Wings kept trying, though, as Ward and Bendig got the Wings within two, at 12-10, with just under six minutes to play.

Roik, though, personally put the game out of reach.

With Cable and Philadelphia's Rich Brzeski each in the box each serving minor penalties, Wings coach Lindsay Sanderson pulled again Schroeder to give the Wings a man advantage, as he did on the last Bendig goal.

This time, it backfired, as Roik, after making a save, lobbed the ball downfield and hit the net before Schroeder or any of the Philly defensemen could get there to stop it.

Roik becomes the sixth goaltender in league history to score a goal, and the second to do it against the Wings (Rob Blasdell, Albany, 1 December 2001).

Roik's 29 saves (on just 39 Philadelphia shots) proved good enough for the victory, while Nick Schroeder made 31 saves for Philadelphia in defeat.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, 22 January -- the Storm facing off against Rochester at Arrowhead Pond, the Wings hosting the Toronto Rock.
