Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of Week Two, 7-8 January 2005. (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.)

Toronto Rock at Buffalo Bandits
Friday, 7:30 PM - HSBC Arena
Info: Game Summary | Game Stats

John Tavares scored six goals, including four in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough for the Bandits to rally past the Rock in a 15-13 decision.

Buffalo (0-1) took a 2-0 lead after six minutes, on goals by Mark Steenhuis and Billy Dee Smith, but Toronto (1-0) ran off three of its own late in the first quarter. A Jonas Derks goal tied it at three to end the period.

The Bandits built a 7-5 halftime on two goals from Tavares and singles by Steenhuis and A.J. Shannon, but slumped badly after intermission, going better than 23 minutes without a goal.

By that point, Toronto had forged a 13-7 lead on eight consecutive goals, by six scorers. Only Matt Shearer scored more than once in the run, recording a hat trick.

Buffalo finally came to life midway through the fourth quarter, with Tavares leading the charge. The Bandits scored six times in the final seven minutes, four by 'JT' and two by Dan Teat.

All Toronto needed to secure the win was one goal, though, and it got two -- Shearer at 10:19 and Josh Sanderson 37 seconds later.

Tavares finished with eight points (6 goals, 2 assists), with Shearer (4 goals, 4 assists) posting the same point total.

Philadelphia Wings at Arizona Sting
Friday, 9:30 PM - Glendale Arena
Info: Game Summary | Game Stats

Marc Morley scored at 1:50 of overtime, pushing the Wings to a 10-9 victory over the Sting.

Philadelphia (1-0) fell behind 2-0 by the middle of the first quarter, but pulled to within one on a Bryan Bendig goal late in the period, then took a 4-2 on another goal by Bendig and two by Tom Marechek.

Arizona (0-1) jumped back in front, 6-5, late in the third quarter when Pat Maddalena scored the first of his three goals at 10:21.

After a couple lead swings put Philadelphia ahead, 9-8, late in the game, Maddalena came through again, scoring with 54 seconds remaining to force overtime.

Shortly before Morley's overtime goal, Maddalena thought he had the game-winner -- but the officials correctly ruled that the shot clock expired first.

Bendig (2 goals, 3 assists) and Arizona's Dan Dawson (3 goals, 2 assists) tied for a game-high five points.

Dallas Eliuk secured the victory for the Wings by stopping 55 of 64 Sting shots. Mike Miron (30 saves on 40 shots) took the loss.

San Jose Stealth at Calgary Roughnecks
Friday, 9:30 PM - Pengrowth Saddledome
Info: Game Summary | Game Stats

Gary Rosyski scored three goals as the Stealth spoiled the Roughnecks' banner-raising party, 12-10.

San Jose (1-0), playing without newly-acquired Curt and Derek Malawsky, struck first on a Curtis Hodgson goal, but trailed by the end of the first quarter, 2-1, after Chris Gill scored twice.

Calgary (0-2) held the Stealth at bay through much of the second quarter, but fell behind on goals first by Matt Oglesby (5-4) and later Ryan Boyle (6-5). The Roughnecks regained the lead on late-quarter goals by Tracey Kelusky and Kevin Howard.

San Jose went ahead for good by posting a 3-0 shutout in the third quarter, converting goals by Luke Gilbert, Brad Dairon, and Rosyski into a 9-7 lead.

A three-goal Stealth run in the fourth quarter put the game away.

Rob Blasdell posted the victory in relief, stopping 9 fourth-quarter shots; Anthony Cosmo (29 saves, 7 goals allowed) was in line for the win, but got ejected for illegal equipment. Curtis Palidwor (32 saves) suffered the loss.

Arizona Sting at Colorado Mammoth
Saturday, 9:00 PM - Pepsi Center
Info: Game Stats

Dan Dawson scored five goals, including one which broke a late 14-14 tie, as the Sting upset the Mammoth, 16-15.

Cory Bomberry (3 goals, 3 assists) put Arizona (1-1) ahead early, but Colorado (1-1) then ran off four goals by the middle of the first quarter, starting with the first of Gary Gait's three goals.

The Sting pulled to within a goal by the end of the period, then continued a five-goal run by going up 6-4 in the second. Colorado went on its own run, though, and led 7-6 at intermission.

Dawson's fourth goal tied the game at 11-11 with a little over a minute left in the third quarter.

Colorado then jumped to a 13-11 lead on two goals by Gavin Prout (5 goals, 2 assists) early in the fourth, but Arizona eventually pulled even, then went ahead on Dawson's final score and padded its lead on a goal by Lindsay Plunkett (2 goals, assist).

Mike Miron picked up the victory, recording 43 saves and one assist. Gord Nash took the loss despite a 40-save performance.

Philadelphia Wings at Anaheim Storm
Saturday, 10:30 PM - Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim
Info: Game Summary | Game Stats

Shawn Cable scored three goals, leading the Storm to a come-from-behind 13-10 victory over the Wings.

Philadelphia (1-1) led 5-2 after one quarter, on goals by five different scorers (including notables Keith Cromwell, Tom Marechek, and Jeff Ratcliffe), but could do no better than splitting four goals in the second and took a 7-4 lead into the break.

Anaheim (1-0) made its move in the third quarter, traditionally Philadelphia's weakest, scoring all four goals in the period -- Cable, Raweras Mitchell, Ryan Powell, and Casey Powell -- to take an 8-7 lead.

The Storm kept pounding in the fourth quarter (much like the current weather in California), with Cable scoring twice more on the way to a 12-8 Anaheim lead.

Philadelphia made a late run, on goals by Ryan Ward and Bryan Bendig, but Matt Roik put the game away by becoming the sixth goaltender in league history to score a goal, connecting for an empty-net goal.

In goal, Roik stopped 29 of 39 shots, while Nick Schroeder tallied 31 saves (on 43 shots) for the Wings.

Calgary Roughnecks at San Jose Stealth
Saturday, 10:30 PM - HP Pavilion
Info: Game Stats

Tracey Kelusky scored five goals, leading the Roughnecks to their first win of the season, 13-10 over the Stealth.

Calgary (1-2) went ahead 3-2 after one quarter, led by a pair of Chris Gill goals, but San Jose (1-1) kept pace throughout the second quarter for a 6-5 Riggers lead at halftime.

After trading goals with Calgary to open the third quarter, San Jose went on a three-goal run -- but the Roughnecks closed with a triple of their own, and the one-goal Calgary lead carried into the final period.

Brad Dairon scored first in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 10-10, but it was all Calgary the rest of the way, with Kelusky burying the game-winner.

Kelusky's seven points (5 goals, 2 assists) led all scorers, with Lewis Ratcliff (2 goals, 4 assists) not far behind. Gary Rosyski (goal, 5 assists) had six points for San Jose.
