NLL Week Six RoundupRiggers win rivalry game over Mammoth; Wings rebound with narrow winR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of Week Six, 4-5 February 2005. (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.) Colorado Mammoth at Calgary Roughnecks In a game that wasn't as close as the final score suggests, Calgary (4-2) exploded for a 6-2 lead after one quarter, then held even through the second period for an 11-7 halftime lead. Colorado (2-3) slipped even further behind by allowing four of the first five second-half goals but got back to within four (15-11) by the middle of the third quarter on three goals in 27 seconds. The Roughnecks kept coming at Mammoth netminder Gee Nash, recording the last two goals of the third period and the first of the fourth. After that, it was all Mammoth, to the tune of five unanswered goals, but it wasn't enough. Lewis Ratcliff led all scorers with three Roughnecks goals and five assists, with Toth (4 goals, 2 assists) not far behind. Gavin Prout (3 goals, 3 assists) and Chris Panos (goal, 5 assists) tallied six points each for the Mammoth. Anaheim Storm at Arizona Sting Arizona (3-3) fell behind 6-1 after one quarter, but amazingly pitched a second-quarter shutout and went to halftime with a 6-6 tie. Anaheim (2-3) scored twice early in the third quarter, taking an 8-7 which held up for six minutes. Once the Sting got going, though, it was all over. Arizona ran off five goals to end the third quarter and another five to start the fourth, keeping Anaheim off the scoreboard for a very impressive 26:38. Dan Dawson (4 goals, 3 assists) led the Sting in scoring, with Gewas Schindler (2 goals, 2 assists) and new acquisition Jonas Derks (3 goals) making strong showings. Anaheim, on the other hand, had only one player (Matt Dwane: 1 goal, 2 assists) with more than two points. San Jose Stealth at Philadelphia Wings After playing to a 2-2 tie in the first quarter, San Jose (3-3) held a thin 5-4 lead midway through the second when Philadelphia (2-3) ran off five straight goals. Marechek and Dan Marohl each connected twice in the run, which put the Wings ahead 9-5 at halftime. San Jose narrowed the gap to 10-8 as Philadelphia played another of its subpar third quarters, being outshot 17-7 and scoring just once. The fourth period, though, was another story for the Wings, who struck for the first two goals and held on as the Stealth waged a fierce comeback. San Jose got within one with 47 seconds left by scoring its second six-on-five goal in 20 seconds, but couldn't force overtime. Marohl and San Jose's Curt Malawsky led all scorers with two goals and five assists each. Gary Rosyski and Kevin Fines tallied hat tricks for the Stealth. -30- |
