Knighthawks rally past Wings, 16-15Grant factors in last eight Rochester goals, finishes with 10 assistsR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief John Grant had a hand in all eight second-half Rochester goals Saturday night, leading the Knighthawks to a come-from-behind 16-15 victory over the Philadelphia Wings at Blue Cross Arena. Philadelphia led 15-13 with three and a half minutes to play, but surrendered the game's final three goals. Early on, the Wings had no trouble trading punches with the explosive Knighthawks, quickly erasing a 2-0 deficit and keeping host Rochester on the defensive for much of the first half. Philadelphia ended the first quarter ahead by one, 5-4, led by two Marc Morley goals. The second period was more of the same, with Rochester creeping into the lead (6-5 at the 3:29 mark, on goals by Shawn Williams and Grant) and Philadelphia countering to take a 9-7 lead just before halftime. Scott Evans knocked home a six-on-five goal at 14:53, and the Wings' lead was in jeopardy, up by just a goal at the break. Jeff Ratcliffe made it a 10-8 game three and a half minutes into the second half, but Philadelphia (as usual) soon fell victim to its third quarter curse. Mat Giles, Mike Accursi and Grant (his only second-half goal, amid seven assists) scored in succession for an 11-10 Rochester lead. Shawn Williams and Tim Soudan, playing his first game of the season, stretched the advantage to 13-10 early in the fourth quarter. Philadelphia came back, though, scoring five goals in a row over eight minutes. Dan Marohl scored twice early in the run, while Ratcliffe struck twice to end it. Evans stopped Philadelphia dead in its tracks with a goal at 11:32, followed two minutes later by an equalizer from Ken Millin. Thirty-four seconds later, hometown hero Soudan buried a feed from Williams for the game-clincher. Grant finished with two goals and ten assists, falling just one assist short of Derek Malawsky's single-game assist record and two points shy of the single-game point record, held by several players. Grant's assist and point totals are the best of any player this season, edging out Buffalo's John Tavares (nine assists and eleven points, accomplished just last night). Despite being overshadowed by Grant tonight, Williams still had one of the best games by anyone this season, recording four goals and six assists for a very impressive ten points. Marohl (three goals, three assists) and Tom Marechek (two goals, four assists) led the Wings in scoring. Pat O'Toole recorded the victory by making 48 saves on 63 shots faced. Nick Schroeder (twelve saves on 20 shots) and Dallas Eliuk (fourteen saves on 22 shots) each played one half for Philadelphia. -30- |
