NLL Week Fourteen RoundupFour teams look to wrap up playoff berthsR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of Week Fourteen, 1-3 April 2005. (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.) Rochester Knighthawks at Buffalo Bandits After Buffalo (9-5) established a 3-1 lead after the first quarter, the Knighthawks surged back to tie the game at 4-4 going to intermission. Rochester (8-6) then grabbed an 8-6 lead at the end of the third quarter, scoring the last three goals of the quarter. The fourth quarter, though, was all Buffalo, as the Bandits scored four times in eight minutes, for a 10-8 lead with four minutes to play. After John Grant trimmed the lead to 10-9, though, Mark Steenhuis delivered an empty-net goal at 14:48. Rochester's Scott Evans led all scorers with seven points, on two goals and five assists. Grant, Mat Giles, and Ken Millin also had two goals for the Knighthawks. Steenhuis, Delby Powless, John Tavares, and Dan Teat scored twice each for Buffalo. Calgary Roughnecks at Toronto Rock The Rock scored seven times in the fourth quarter, including the game's final six goals, turning a 10-10 thriller into a 16-10 rout over the Roughnecks. Calgary (8-5) jumped out to a 5-2 lead eleven minutes into the game, but the Rock reeled in their guests, tying the game at five by quarter's end. A quiet second quarter -- one goal per team -- yielded to a busy third, in which Toronto (9-3) scored three straight goals, only to watch the Roughnecks counter with two of their own. The Riggers tied the game twice early in the fourth quarter, at 9-9 on a Tracey Kelusky goal and 10-10 on a Kevin Howard strike. Toronto countered with six straight goals to end the game, including three from Colin Doyle. Doyle finished as the game's top scorer, with five goals and three assists. Aaron Wilson (3 goals, 4 assists), Blaine Manning (goal, 6 assists), and Josh Sanderson (goal, 6 assists) were close behind at seven points each. Kelusky and Lewis Ratcliff scored three goals each for Calgary. Colorado Mammoth at Minnesota Swarm Minnesota (3-11) got out to a 4-1 by the 6:18 mark, only to allow the Mammoth to steal the lead with five straight goals in less than eleven minutes. The Swarm continued to hang tough and only trailed 8-6 at intermission. The second half was another story, with Colorado (9-5) banging out five third-quarter goals and holding the Swarm scoreless throughout the fourth quarter. Josh Sims and Del Halladay each scored three goals for Colorado, with Gait -- playing his first game since 2002 -- adding a pair. Kelly Hall scored three goals for Minnesota. Toronto Rock at Philadelphia Wings Philadelphia (6-7) led 4-2 after one quarter and 8-5 at intermission, with Tom Marechek scoring three times in the first half. However, the wheels soon fell off for the Wings, as Toronto (10-3) scored nine times in the third quarter for a 14-11 lead. The Rock tacked on three more goals to open the fourth quarter, then held off a late Wings rally. Blaine Manning scored four goals for Toronto, with Doyle, Aaron Wilson and Matt Shearer adding hat tricks. Marechek finished with four goals for Philadelphia. Anaheim Storm at Colorado Mammoth The loss spoiled a pregame tribute to the retiring Gary Gait, who was playing in his final regular-season home game. Anaheim, 4-9 and still alive (barely) in the playoff race, had a 2-0 lead before the game was five minutes old, but squandered it in minutes, allowing goals to Dan Stroup, Gary Gait and Paul Gait before recovering to forge a 2-2 tie after 15 minutes. Led by a pair of goals from Peter Morgan, the Storm established an 8-4 halftime lead, then Richard Morgan scored the only goal of the third quarter. Two more Storm goals made it a 10-4 ballgame with six minutes to play. Colorado (8-6) finally got back on the scoreboard with a Brad Self goal at 11:20 -- 32 minutes and 56 seconds after the previous Mammoth goal. Paul Gait then netted a goal in the last minute. Peter Morgan led all scorers with five points, on three goals and two assists. Gary Gait (goal, 2 assists) and Gavin Prout (3 assists) had three points each for the Mammoth. Arizona Sting at Calgary Roughnecks Arizona (7-6) still needs just a win or an Anaheim loss to clinch a playoff spot, having allowed a tight contest to spiral out of control in the first half. After the teams played to a 3-3 tie in the first quarter, Calgary (9-5) ran off five straight goals to start the second quarter, then added another in the final 90 seconds after Arizona finally ended the string of goals. The Sting never again drew closer than four goals, trailing 11-7 after three quarters and allowing another six goals in the fourth. Ted Dowling scored four times for the Roughnecks, with Kelusky adding three. Dan Dawson potted four for the Sting. -30- |
