NLL Week Fifteen Roundup2004 title game rematch at Saddledome; Rock looks to clinch HFAR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of Week Fifteen, 8-10 April 2005. (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.) Rochester Knighthawks at San Jose Stealth Rochester (9-6), which clinched the final Eastern Division playoff spot with the win, fell behind on a Cam Woods goal, but rallied for a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter, courtesy of Scott Evans and Grant. After San Jose (4-11) scored twice at mid-quarter, 50 seconds apart, the Knighthawks ran off three straight goals, and survived a last-second Kevin Fines goal for a 5-4 halftime lead. Grant struck twice to open the third quarter (the first of which was his 500th career point), giving Rochester a relatively safe 7-4 lead. Although San Jose pulled within a goal one minute into the fourth quarter, at 8-6, it couldn't get the equalizer, eventually surrendering a 6-on-5 goal to Mat Giles with six minutes left. Grant had a game-high six points, on four goals and two assists. Giles, Evans, Steve Toll and Ryan O'Connor also scored for the Knighthawks. Cam Woods had three goals for the Stealth, with Ryan Boyle adding two. Toronto Rock at Philadelphia Wings Toronto (11-3) got off to a hot start, leading 4-2 after one quarter. Philadelphia (6-8) rebounded with a big second period, though, pulling to within a goal at 8-7. The Wings went on to score three times in the third quarter, with Andrew Burkholder finishing a natural hat trick he began in the second quarter, and came 26 seconds from a period shutout. That late goal, however, spelled doom for Philadelphia, with Toronto going on to score the first four goals of the fourth quarter. Aaron Wilson and Blaine Manning scored four goals each for Toronto. Burkholder and Keith Cromwell scored three times each, with the retiring Tom Marechek adding two goals in his final home game. Buffalo Bandits at Calgary Roughnecks Calgary (9-6) led 3-0 after one quarter and 6-3 at halftime, but couldn't keep up its fine defensive effort after the break. Buffalo (10-5) scored three times to open the third quarter, and six times overall, for a 9-8 lead. The Bandits continued to pour it on in the fourth period, scoring five straight goals and holding the Roughnecks scoreless until just 2:17 remained. A.J. Shannon and Mark Steenhuis scored three goals each for Buffalo. Ted Dowling and Lewis Ratcliff led Calgary with two goals each. The victory assures Buffalo of a home playoff game against Rochester, during the weekend of 22-24 April. Calgary, meanwhile, missed a chance to clinch the Western Division title but remains in first place. Colorado Mammoth at Arizona Sting Arizona (8-6) clinched its first-ever playoff berth with the victory, but not without having to rally from an early second-half deficit. The Sting took an early 2-0 lead, then held off Colorado (8-7) for a 5-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Mammoth stormed back, though, to tie the game at 8-8 heading to the locker rooms, then went up by one in the third, thanks to a Randy Daly goal. Colorado tied the game a couple more times but couldn't get back out in front. Two late goals by Dawson put the game out of reach. Derks (3 goals, 4 assists) and Pat Maddalena (2 goals, 5 assists) led the Sting with seven points each. Gary Gait tallied six points (2 goals, 4 assists) for the Mammoth. Minnesota Swarm at Anaheim Storm Anaheim (4-10) held leads of 3-2 after the first quarter and 7-4 at halftime, with three Peter Morgan goals as the difference. After a 1-1 third quarter, Minnesota (4-11) burst out for six goals in the final ten minutes of regulation, with Ryan Ward scoring four of them -- the last with two seconds left in the game. In sudden death, the teams combined for eight shots on goal before Taylor finally connected. Ward led all scorers with five goals, with Taylor and Sean Pollock adding two each. Morgan had three goals for the Swarm. Philadelphia Wings at Toronto Rock Philadelphia (6-9) had a 3-0 lead before the game was five minutes old, extended the advantage to 5-3 after one quarter and led 8-4 at halftime. The Wings took their lead all the way to 13-6, six minutes into the fourth quarter, before Toronto (12-3) roared back. Blaine Manning opened the run with a pair of 6-on-5 goals, 28 seconds apart, and a Who's Who of Rock forwards whittled away the deficit. Chris Driscoll tied the game at 13-13 at 11:07, then Josh Sanderson tallied the winner with 92 seconds remaining. The Rock's big three -- Colin Doyle (2 goals, 7 assists), Manning (4 goals, 4 assists) and Sanderson (3 goals, 4 assists) -- all had big afternoons offensively. So did Philadelphia's Tom Marechek (4 goals, 1 assist), who is making the most of his few remaining games before retirement. -30- |
