Bandits give Stealth the slip in 13-10 winBuffalo rallies from four goals down; balanced attack gets it doneDeb McAllister Outsider's Guide Assistant Editor The Buffalo Bandits closed out their regular season in fine fashion Saturday night at HSBC Arena, rallying to defeat the San Jose Stealth, 13-10, in front of a crowd of 12,138, their largest crowd in recent memory. Both defenses were strong to start the game, with the first goal of the night coming nearly ten minutes in, courtesy of John Tavares. Less than a minute later, made it a 2-0 lead, and the game stayed the way the rest of the quarter. With Curtis Hodgson leading the way, San Jose went on a tear in the second quarter, scoring six straight times. After Hodgson put the Stealth on the board just past the four-minute mark, Ryan Boyle tied the game at two. Gary Rosyski gave the Stealth the lead two minutes later, followed by another from Boyle and goals by Kevin Fines and Cam Sedgwick. Tavares finally potted one for Buffalo with two and a half minutes left before intermission, cutting the Stealth lead to 6-3 at the break. Buffalo head coach Darris Kilgour must have made a very powerful speech in the locker room at halftime, as the team came on to the floor with fire in their eyes. Steenhuis opened the scoring with two goals in two minutes, cutting the Bandits' deficit to 6-5, but Rosyski wasted no time in restoring the three-goal cushion by scoring twice and assisting on a Curt Malawsky goal. Buffalo regained its footing by mid-quarter, and goals from Dan Teat and Kyle Laverty brought the Bandits within 9-7. Kevin Olson, playing in his first game of the season, then traded a goal with Buffalo's Aime Caines to close out the third quarter. By the 6:07 mark, Buffalo had tied the game at 10-10, on goals by Bryan Kazarian and Jon Harasym, and never looked back. Tavares put the Bandits back in the lead seconds later (and just 58 seconds after the Kazarian goal), then Caines and Pat McCready tossed in insurance goals. Tavares and Steenhuis led Buffalo's attack with three goals and two assists each. San Jose was led by Gary Rosyski (three goals, two assists) and Ryan Boyle (two goals, three assists), with five points each. Bandits starting netminder Steve Dietrich played the first five minutes of the game, stopping all six shots he faced before yielding to Derek General (41 shots, 31 saves). Anthony Cosmo played the whole game for San Jose, recording 41 saves. -30- |
