Sting at home for first-ever home playoff game; Another Thruway battle

Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of the Divisional Semifinal weekend, 22-23 April 2005. (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.)


Colorado Mammoth at Arizona Sting
Friday, 10:30 PM - Glendale Arena

Dan Dawson scored three fourth-quarter goals, leading the Sting past the Mammoth, 16-13.

Colorado (8-9, 0-1) jumped out to a 7-3 lead after one quarter, but Arizona (10-7, 1-0) whittled away the lead, pulling within 8-6 at halftime and tying the game at 10-10 by the end of the third quarter.

Craig Conn led Arizona (10-7, 1-0) with five goals, while Dawson had four. Brian Langtry had four goals for Colorado (8-9, 0-1).

The game was Gary Gait's final appearance as a player. The Mammoth legend announced before the season that this would be his last.

Arizona moves on to play next Saturday at Calgary.



Rochester Knighthawks at Buffalo Bandits

Mike Accursi scored seven goals, leading the Knighthawks to a 19-14 upset victory over the Bandits.

Rochester (11-6, 1-0) built a 3-0 lead over the first ten minutes and held a commanding 10-3 lead with five minutes left in the first half. The Bandits then rallied to within 11-8 at halftime.

Buffalo (11-6, 0-1) proceeded to make a game of it, getting within one goal on two separate occasions in the third quarter and again early in the fourth quarter -- but Rochester ran off four straight goals (two by John Grant, two by Accursi) to seal the victory.

Accursi (7 goals, 1 assist) and Grant (4 goals, 4 assists) shared the game high in points, with eight. Mark Steenhuis (5 goals, 1 assist) led the Bandits with six points.

The Knighthawks advance to the Eastern Division final next weekend, when they will meet the Toronto Rock at Air Canada Centre.
