NLL Week Seven: Wings outlast RoughnecksEdmonton takes down Arizona; Buffalo holds off ChicagoR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of Week Seven, 10-11 February 2007. (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.) Arizona Sting at Edmonton Rush Arizona (4-2) led 4-0 less than five minutes into the game, paced by two goals from Dan Dawson, but almost as quickly allowed the Rush to pull within 4-3. A late-period exchange of goals between Lindsay Plunkett and Jason Wulder made it 5-4 after one quarter. After allowing Plunkett to score again to begin the second quarter and a long scoreless run, Edmonton (2-3) ran off four straight goals to end the first half with an 8-6 lead, with Jim Quinlan providing the final strike with one second to go before intermission. Stroup kept the run of consecutive goals going with a goal 39 seconds into the second half, but Dawson scored about a minute later for the Sting. Randy Daly and Ryan O'Connor then countered for the Rush, who moved ahead 11-7 at the end of the third quarter. Plunkett scored just 40 seconds into the fourth quarter, suggesting a comeback, but when Dawson scored to make it 11-9, less than four minutes remained and the Sting couldn't get any closer before time ran out. Dawson recorded a game-high six points (4 goals, 2 assists). Daly (1 goal, 4 assists) put up five points for the Rush. Philadelphia Wings at Calgary Roughnecks Calgary (4-2) struck first in a back-and-forth first quarter, as Jeff Shattler scored at 4:21. Dan Marohl and Jeff Ratcliffe soon responded for the Wings, but the Riggers went to the second quarter with a 3-2 lead after Kaleb Toth and Kerry Susheski scored. Jake Bergey tied the game for Philadelphia (4-2) two and a half minutes into the second, but Lewis Ratcliffe and Andrew McBride soon combined for a 5-3 Roughneck lead. Geoff Snider then scored off the ensuing faceoff and the Wings were off and running, as Kyle Wailes and Sean Greenhalgh struck before halftime for a 6-5 lead. Marohl and Ian Llord got the only third-quarter goals, then Ratcliffe and Bergey combined to put Philly ahead, 10-5, with seven minutes to play. Ratcliff finished out the scoring with two goals, but the Riggers never got in position to make a serious run at tying the game. Marohl had five points for the Wings, on two goals and three assists. Ratcliff led the Roughnecks with four points (3 goals, 2 assists). Buffalo Bandits at Chicago Shamrox Buffalo (3-4) got off to a 3-1 lead after one quarter, courtesy of two goals by Tavares and one from Kevin Dostie. After Chris Panos opened the second period with a Shamrox goal, the Bandits kept right on going, scoring four in succession in less than five minutes. Darryl Gibson's goal with 90 seconds left in the first half narrowed the gap to 7-3, and Chicago (3-3) used it as a springboard to three more goals at the start of the second half, two by former Bandit Jason Clark. Buffalo's Delby Powless and Mark Steenhuis scored late in the third quarter, though, putting the Bandits ahead by three, 9-6. Clark scored to begin the fourth quarter, but goals by Tavares and Steenhuis lifted the Bandits to an 11-7 lead with nine minutes to play. That's when Chicago finally got down to business, as Bill McGlone and Mike Kirk scored two minutes apart, narrowing the gap to 11-9. Tavares soon countered, and while Chris Panos and Mat Giles netted goals for Chicago in the final minute and a half, the Shamrox could not convert their final scoring chance, with thirteen seconds to play. Tavares led all scorers with seven points, adding three assists to his four goals. Clark (3 goals, 2 assists) and Jon Harasym (1 goal, 4 assists) tallied five points in defeat. -30- |
