NLL Week Ten: Knighthawks rally past WingsTitans upset Rock, 13-10; Bandits survive Swarm, 16-15R.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of Week Ten, 2-4 March 2007. (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.) San Jose Stealth at Edmonton Rush Edmonton (3-5) scored first, on a Ryan O'Connor tally just seventeen seconds in, but it was the Stealth who held the lead for most of the first quarter, converting goals by Gary Rosyski and Luke Wiles into a 2-1 lead before the game was six minutes old. Zywicki extended the lead to 3-1 for San Jose (3-5) two and a half minutes into the second quarter, but the Rush struck back with five straight goals to end the first half with a 6-3 lead. San Jose pulled to within 6-5 after a low-scoring third quarter, as Zywicki and Colin Doyle got the only goals. Andrew Burkholder scored twice to begin the fourth quarter, putting the Stealth ahead, then Curtis Hodgson and Rosyski struck for more -- a 9-6 lead with fewer than seven minutes to play. After Chris Gill scored a goal for Edmonton, Zywicki and Kyle Sorenson tallied for the Stealth, putting the game out of reach. Wiles (1 goal, 5 assists) led all scorers with six points. Gill and Stroup had matching three-goal, one-assist performances to pace the Rush. Chicago Shamrox at Arizona Sting Chicago (3-6) had a 2-0 lead early after Chris Panos and Mat Giles found rope, only to watch as Dawson erased the deficit on a pair of assists from Lindsay Plunkett. Bryan Kazarian scored for the Shamrox early in the second, going ahead 3-2, but Arizona (6-3) responded with five of the next six goals, including another two from Dawson, and an 8-3 halftime lead. Plunkett and Dawson combined again in the third quarter, scoring consecutive goals for a 10-4 advantage, then extended the lead when Curt Malawsky scored to open the fourth quarter. Dawson (5 goals, 3 assists) easily earned top scoring honors, with eight points. Plunkett (2 goals, 4 assists) was second-best at six points, while three Shamrox players, including Jon Harasym (hat trick) had three points each. Rochester Knighthawks at Philadelphia Wings After the teams alternated goals for much of the first quarter, Rochester (8-2) cracked open a 5-2 lead early in the second quarter when Shawn Evans, Stephen Hoar and Grant combined for consecutive goals. However, Philadelphia (4-5) rallied to within 5-4 when Athan Iannucci and Sean Greenhalgh scored ten seconds apart, with about five and half minutes left before intermission. After a couple Rochester goals, Kyle Wailes netted a goal at 14:31, for a 7-5 halftime score. Scott Evans extended the Knighthawks' lead to 8-5 some 40 seconds into the second half, but the Wings responded with four goals to close the period with a 9-8 lead. The notorious fading Wings, who've already dropped a few games this year despite leading late, did it again tonight, allowing Shawn Williams to score twice for an 11-10 lead, then again three minutes for a 12-11 advantage. Jeff Ratcliffe tied the game for Philadelphia near mid-quarter, but Grant snapped that tie a half-minute later and stretched the lead to 14-12 on a final-minute power play. Iannucci scored for Philly in the final ten seconds, but the Wings couldn't strike again and force overtime. Grant led all scorers with seven points, on three goals and four assists. Wailes (3 goals, 3 assists) had six points for the Wings. Toronto Rock at New York Titans A decidedly bland first quarter ended 1-1 after Brian Tower scored mid-quarter for New York (2-8) and Blaine Manning responded for the Rock with five seconds left. The offense picked up a bit in the second quarter -- well, the Titans' did, anyway, with Mike McLellan, Pat Maddalena and Casey Powell scoring consecutive goals to end the first half, flipping a 2-2 tie into a 5-2 lead. Toronto (4-5) began a slow climb back towards a tie during the third quarter, running off three straight goals to get within 6-5. After the Titans responded with a pair of goals, the Rock ran off three straight again, tying the game at 8-8. The Rock then took a 9-8 lead on Rusty Kruger's goal a minute and a half into the fourth quarter, but that was just about it for the Rock offensively, as New York rattled off five straight goals, two by Maddalena. Chris Driscoll finally snapped the run for Toronto, but by then, only ten seconds remained in the game. Toronto's Jim Veltman was tonight's high scorer, tallying seven points (all on assists). Powell led the Titans with six points (3 goals, 3 assists). Buffalo Bandits at Minnesota Swarm Tavares scored three of those goals in the first 6:03, guiding Buffalo (6-4) to an early 3-2 lead. Goals by Delby Powless, Mark Steenhuis and Dan Teat extended the Bandits' lead to 6-3 after one period. Minnesota (5-4) fared much better offensively in the second quarter, with a Dean Hill hat trick sparking a six-goal period for the Swarm. However, with Tavares scoring again and dishing out three assists, Buffalo also netted six goals and led 12-9 at intermission. After Tavares and Hill, scorers extraordinaire, exchanged goals early in the third quarter, Minnesota surged for three in the final five minutes of the period, pulling to within one, 14-13. As it turned out, Buffalo's now-slim lead wasn't in jeopardy for very long. Kevin Dostie scored off the opening faceoff of the fourth quarter, then struck again five minutes later, opening some much-needed breathing room. Kasey Beirnes and Scott Stewart scored just past mid-quarter for the Swarm, but Mike Thompson (inserted in relief of Steve Dietrich to start the fourth quarter) held resolute in goal for Buffalo, perserving the one-goal victory. Tavares (5 goals, 4 assists) had the top point total, nine, but several players were right behind with eight -- Teat (4 goals, 4 assists) and Cory Bomberry (8 assists) for the Bandits, and Hill (5 goals, 3 assists) and Sean Pollock (2 goals, 6 assists) for the Swarm. -30- |
