NLL Week Thirteen: Bandits upset MammothSan Jose winning streak reaches five; Rochester clinches playoff berthR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of Week Thirteen, 23-25 March 2007. (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.) Toronto Rock at Minnesota Swarm Toronto (5-7) led 2-1 after one quarter, on goals by Benesch and Sanderson in the opening three minutes, then stretched the advantage to 7-1 by the middle of the second quarter. Sanderson netted three goals in the run. Minnesota (6-4) finally snapped what had been a 24-minute scoring drought when Chad Culp netted a goal with 1:20 left in the first half. Minnesota pulled closer in the third quarter, with Scott Stewart, Dean Hill and Sean Pollock scoring for the Swarm, against Benesch's third of the game for Toronto -- 8-5 Rock, going to the fourth. Sanderson and Benesch scored quickly to begin the fourth quarter, pushing Toronto's lead to 10-5. Blaine Manning and Chris Driscoll added goals midway through the period, then, after a Stewart goal, Driscoll scored again with just over five minutes left to play. Sanderson led all scorers with six points, on five goals and one assist. Ryan Ward paced the Swarm with four points, all on assists. Chicago Shamrox at Philadelphia Wings After taking a 4-3 lead out of the first quarter, Chicago (3-8) thoroughly dominated the second period. Bill McGlone, Chris Panos and Tom Montour scored early, and (after Athan Iannucci struck for the Wings) McGlone and Mat Giles added goals in the final two minutes of the half. Jake Bergey and Panos exchanged goals in the first 1:34 of the second half, then Iannucci and McGlone did the same moments later, for an 11-6 Shamrox lead. Sean Greenhalgh scored the only goal the rest of the period, netting a goal at 9:06. Philadelphia (5-6) quickly erased the four-goal deficit once the fourth quarter began, with Greenhalgh, Dan Marohl, Iannucci and Bergey scoring in the first five minutes. The game stayed deadlocked at 11-11 until 40 seconds remained, when Rob Van Beek hit Kyle Fiat with a pass and the rookie forward fired a shot past Shamrx netminder Brandon Miller. Greenhalgh (4 goals, 2 assists) and Marohl (1 goal, 5 assists) led all scorers with six points each, while McGlone (3 goals, 1 assist) and Jonas Derks (4 assists) both tallied four points. Colorado Mammoth at Buffalo Bandits Buffalo (8-4) led 4-2 after one quarter, as Tavares and Dan Teat scored twice each, bookended by a Brian Langtry goal to begin the game and a Dan Carey goal to close out the period. Carey scored three more times in the second quarter as Colorado (10-2) surged ahead, 6-5. The teams swapped goals twice, including one exchange in the final 39 seconds of the half, for an 8-7 Mammoth intermission lead. Tavares scored twice to begin the second half, but The 'Chuks -- Ben Prepchuk and Jamie Shewchuk -- soon restored the Mammoth's lead and Gavin Prout extended it to 11-9. Buffalo, though, scored three goals to end the period with a 12-11 lead. Jordan Cornfield scored 37 seconds into the fourth quarter, tying the game, but the rest of the period belonged to Buffalo -- three Kevin Dostie goals, plus two more from Tavares, as the Mammoth surrendered more goals than it had in any game in over four years. At thirteen points, Tavares was far and away the leader in points scored. Langtry (3 goals, 4 assists) and Prout (1 goal, 6 assists) had a relatively pedestrian seven points each for the Mammoth. Rochester Knighthawks at New York Titans Rochester (10-2), which has had a few interesting routes to victory this season, managed to build a 7-2 lead midway through the second quarter, blow the lead almost entirely, and then go on to post a six-goal victory. The Knighthawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead just four minutes into the game, then held that score until Casey Powell netted a goal with a half-minute to play in the first quarter. Shawn Evans and Williams each scored twice in the opening 7:09 of the second quarter, but New York (2-10) got a couple goals to pull within shouting distance. A late Evans goal made it 8-4 at halftime. Three New York goals to begin the second half, two from Ryan Boyle, put the Titans within one, at 8-7, a margin they'd get to again a couple more times over the next six minutes, lastly at 11-10. Rochester then rattled off eight straight goals, including four in a row by Williams, to make a mockery of the Titans' rally and clinch a thirteenth straight postseason berth for the Knighthawks. New York scored five times in the final 4:32 to make the score respectable. Williams finished with five assists to go with his six goals, making for a game-high total of eleven points, and Evans (4 goals, 6 assists) was close behind at ten points. Boyle (4 goals, 5 assists) had nine points to lead the Titans. Arizona Sting at Calgary Roughnecks Calgary (6-5) rolled out to a 5-1 lead by the end of the first quarter when Kelusky and Ratcliff scored four goals (two apiece) in four minutes, snapping a 1-1 tie. The Riggers then extended that lead to 7-1 early in the second quarter when Jeff Shattler and Taylor Wray scored ten seconds apart. Arizona (7-4) scored the next four goals, though, rallying to within 7-5 at intermission. Shattler struck again to begin the third quarter, a period in which Calgary managed to stay just barely ahead of the Sting the entire way. After a Peter Veltman goal cut Calgary's lead to 8-7, Kelusky found rope a few minutes later -- a valuable goal, as Curt Malawsky brought Arizona back within one moments later. Derek Malawsky finished the deal 1:43 into the fourth quarter, tying the game on a feed from Dan Dawson, who then tied the game again following a Scott Ranger goal. Taylor Wray scored unassisted for the Roughnecks a minute later, a goal which gave Calgary a lead it would not relinquish, as Kaleb Toth followed with a tally of his own. Ratcliff and Toth struck again later, building a comfortable margin of victory. Kelusky (3 goals, 4 assists) led the Roughnecks with seven points, a total matched by three Arizona players -- Derek Malawsky (4 goals, 3 assists), Dawson (3 goals, 4 assists) and Lindsay Plunkett (2 goals, 5 assists). San Jose Stealth at Portland LumberJax Despite allowing an early goal to Matt Holman, San Jose (5-5) led after one quarter, 3-1, with Gary Rosyski, Andrew Burkholder and Cam Sedgwick scoring for the Stealth. Portland (2-10) bounced back with goals from Richard Morgan, Jed Prossner and Ryder Bateman for a 4-3 lead. Rosyski soon tied the game, but the Stealth rattled off another quick pair (Kelly Hall and Peter Morgan, 30 seconds apart in the ninth minute), and eventually took a 6-5 lead to intermission. Tyler Heavenor made it a 7-5 ballgame a minute and a half into the third quarter, but with the LumberJax gradually losing a step, it should have seemed obvious what was coming... Jeff Zywicki and Luke Wiles had the game tied, 7-7, by the end of the third quarter, then Steve Holmes scored 5:51 into the fourth quarter to reclaim the lead and Colin Doyle netted an insurance goal with less than three minutes to play. Rosyski (2 goals, 2 assists) and Wiles (1 goal, 3 assists) led all scorers with four points. Peter Morgan (1 goal, 2 assists) had three points for Portland, which hasn't won since mid-January. New York Titans at Chicago Shamrox A back-and-forth first quarter ended 3-3, as Casey Powell gave New York (2-11) a 2-1 lead, Bill McGlone scored twice to put the Shamrox ahead, and Powell struck again moments later to even the score. The second quarter followed an identical pattern, the Titans jumping out to a one-goal lead (Mike McLellan for a 5-4 advantage), then surrendering a pair (Kevin Leveille and Chris Panos) to Chicago (4-8) and pulling out one last goal (Pat Maddalena) to tie the game. If a lulling give and take was coach Adam Mueller's plan, it failed miserably in the third quarter, with Leveille, Cam Woods, Rusty Kruger and Jason Clark netting goals in the first eight minutes. After Powell snapped the Shamrox' run, Mat Giles was quick to start a new one -- 11-7, Chicago, after three. Josh Wasson scored 45 seconds into the fourth quarter, a goal which cemented Chicago's first victory since January and New York's ninth loss in its last ten games. Powell (3 goals, 3 assists) shared top scoring honors with Chicago's Jonas Derks, who tallied all five of his points on assists. Edmonton Rush at San Jose Stealth Zywicki opened the scoring, two minutes in, and a short time later, San Jose (6-5) was ahead 3-0. Edmonton (4-6) quickly pulled to within 3-2, but a Luke Wiles goal with 47 seconds left in the period made the score a more comfortable 4-2. Jamey Bowen brought the Rush to within a goal again early in the second quarter, but Gary Rosyski responded a short time later and Zywicki netted his second goal for a 6-3 lead with 4:30 left before halftime. Twice in the third quarter, Edmonton scored to cut the deficit to two, and each time, Zywicki responded, his third and fourth goals of the game. Zywicki scored again to begin the fourth quarter, boosting the Stealth's lead to 9-5. After a couple more aborted rallies by Edmonton, the Stealth rattled off four unanswered goals, turning a solid win into a rout. Zywicki's nine points (5 goals, 4 assists) led all scorers. Bowen (2 goals, 2 assists) and Jimmy Quinlan (4 assists) had four points each for the Rush. -30- |
