NLL Week Two: Rock escapes upsetToronto needs shutdown quarter from Watson to get past Shamrox, 11-9R.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of Week Two, 5 January 2008. (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.) Toronto Rock at Chicago Shamrox Toronto (1-0) wasted little time in taking an early lead, with Blaine Manning connecting just 49 seconds in. A few minutes later, Kevin Fines tied the game, but Cam Woods quickly restored the Rock's lead. Chicago (0-1) jumped in front by the end of the first quarter, 3-2, but fell behind by a goal at halftime, 5-4, victimized by two Josh Sanderson goals and one by Manning just before the break. Manning scored again to begin the second half, and Kasey Beirnes made it a 7-4 game by the time the third quarter was two minutes old. However, the Shamrox fought back hard the rest of the period, getting singles from (among others) Callum Crawford and Chris Panos for a 9-8 lead. Toronto pulled out the victory in the fourth quarter on Watson's efforts in net and timely goals from Aaron Wilson, Manning and Beirnes. Manning finished with a game-high eight points, on four goals and four assists. Panos led the Shamrox in points, four, on a goal and three assists. -30- |
