NLL Week Five: Pollock spoils Hawks' rallyWings edge Bandits in OT; Mammoth improves to 4-0R.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of Week Five, 24-26 January 2008. (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.) Colorado Mammoth at Portland LumberJax Portland (0-2) snuck out to a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes, cashing in goals by Brodie Merrill and Peter Morgan, but Dan Carey pulled the Mammoth to within 2-1 by the end of the first quarter. Colorado (3-0) then pulled even on a Gavin Prout tally to begin the second quarter, only to quickly surrender two Portland goals. The Mammoth got the game tied again by intermission -- Prout scored with four minutes to go in the half, and Brian Langtry beat the horn. Langtry scored again to begin the third quarter and the teams swapped goals for a 6-5 Mammoth lead. The fourth quarter is when the fireworks began, as Portland raced to a 9-6 lead just over four minutes into the period; Dan Dawson scored twice in the run, bookended by Scott Stewart and Merrill. Colorado countered with three of its own -- Dylan Llord, Carey and Jamie Shewchuk -- to tie the game at 9-9, and the teams traded goals twice late in the regulation, each time with the LumberJax taking the lead and the Mammoth forced to tie. Langtry's third goal of the night, with 1:28 remaining, sent the game to sudden death. Prout had eight points (2 goals, 6 assists), leading all scorers. Stewart and Ryan Powell led the LumberJax, posting identical lines of one goal and four assists. Calgary Roughnecks at San Jose Stealth San Jose (1-1) dominated the scoreboard early, jumping out to a 4-1 lead after just five minutes -- but just as quickly gave it all back, allowing the Riggers to tie the game at 4-4 late in the first quarter. The Stealth scored twice late in the first quarter for a 6-4 lead, but got blitzed by Calgary (1-2) in the second, surrendering four goals to begin the period and falling behind 11-7 by intermission. Shattler scored twice to begin the third quarter, blowing the game wide open, but San Jose did get those goals back by the end of the period. However, the Stealth could not make much of a run in the fourth quarter, scoring four goals but allowing Calgary to respond quickly on four of them. Shattler's eight points (4 goals, 4 assists) easily led all scorers. Zywicki and Colin Doyle paced the Stealth offensively on matching three-goal, three-assist outings. New York Titans at Toronto Rock New York (1-2) took the Rock by surprise early on, scoring three quick goals (two by Ryan Boyle) and led 4-1 after one quarter. The Titans did almost as well in the second quarter, netting another four (two by Jordan Hall) and took an 8-3 lead to the locker room. Toronto (3-2) must have faced a blistering speech at halftime, as the Rock came out firing. Benesch, Blaine Manning, Jamie Taylor, Peter Lough and Aaron Wilson all scored in the third quarter, combined with a shutout by Bob Watson at the other end, and the game was tied at 8-8. Benesch scored twice to the begin the fourth quarter, but the Titans rallied to tie the game again, on goals by Jeff Ratcliffe and Casey Powell. Toronto moved out in front again (that pesky Benesch again) and this time, didn't let New York back in, netting another three goals to seal the victory. Manning and Boyle tied the game-high in points, posting identical lines of two goals and five assists. Buffalo Bandits at Philadelphia Wings Geoff Snider scored right off the opening faceoff, and Philadelphia (3-0) was off and running. Bergey scored to kake it 2-0, and, after a Bandits goal by Mark Steenhuis, Athan Iannucci scored moments later. Buffalo (2-2) countered three straight goals and extended its lead to 5-4 by the end of the first quarter. The Wings shot back by scoring all five goals in the second quarter, taking a 9-5 lead to intermission. Iannucci scored twice in the run, along with single goals from Jamie Rooney, Bergey and Snider. Buffalo got one goal closer in the third quarter, squeezing back-to-back goals by Roger Vyse and Clay Hill into a quarter that otherwise entirely alternated goals, one for one. Kevin Dostie scored twice to begin the fourth quarter, kick-starting a four-goal run that had the Bandits out in front, 14-13, with under three minutes to play. However, Rooney scored with 1:53 left in regulation to tie the game and the Wings won it on the first possession of overtime. Iannucci led the Wings in scoring with four goals and three assists, while Bergey added four goals. John Tavares scored two goals and dished out five assists for Buffalo. Buffalo (2-2) trailed 13-10 entering the fourth quarter, but scored four times (two by Kevin Dostie, who finished with 4 goals and an assist) to force overtime. Philadelphia (3-0) got four goals each from Bergey and Athan Iannucci. Edmonton Rush at Chicago Shamrox Chicago (1-2) took a couple early leads, 2-0 and 3-2, but lost them both -- then almost did it again in the second quarter, turning a 6-3 advantage early on into a 7-5 halftime lead. The Shamrox didn't have this difficulty in the third quarter, though, as Chris Panos, Crawford and Bobby McBride combined to make it a 10-5 game. Edmonton (0-3) got a couple goals late in the third and appeared to be making a game of it, but the Shamrox rattled off four goals to begin the fourth quarter and, following a Rush pair from Chris Gill, strung together another three goals. Crawford finished with eight points, adding four assists to his four goals. Mike Accursi paced the Rush, tallying three goals and three assists. Minnesota Swarm at Rochester Knighthawks Minnesota (3-0) caught the Knighthawks napping for the entire first half, as seven Swarm players (including Craig Point, Dean Hill and Ryan Sharp) scored in the first quarter to take a 7-3 lead. Minnesota pushed its lead to 12-5 at halftime on two more goals by Point, another from Hill, another from Sharp and one from Noah Talbot. Rochester (1-3) sprung its offense in the third quarter, posting separate four-goal runs (each one highlighted by two goals from Scott Evans) to make it dangerously tight, 15-14. After a Ryan Cousins goal gave Minnesota a little breathing room, the Knighthawks took it away -- Shawn Evans, Stephen Hoar and Steve Toll, for a 17-16 Rochester lead. Pollock tied the game with just over five minutes left in regulation, then (amazingly) no one else scored until Pollock potted another one six and a half minutes into overtime. Pollock finished with ten points, on three goals and seven assists. Two players reached eight points for the Knighthawks, Scott Evans (6 goals, 2 assists) and John Grant (3 goals, 5 assists). San Jose Stealth at Colorado Mammoth Jed Prossner gave Colorado (4-0) a 1-0 lead on a goal just past the halfway point of the first quarter. Jeff Zywicki soon countered for the Stealth, but Carey restored the Mammoth's lead in the final minute of the period. Colorado dominated the second quarter offensively, rattling off three goals (Gavin Prout, Carey and Brian Langtry) before San Jose (1-2) could muster a Cam Sedgwick goal two minutes before halftime. Tom Johnson narrowed the Colorado lead to 5-3 early in the third quarter, but the Mammoth came right back with three straight tallies. After that, San Jose could not string together consecutive goals, three times pulling within four goals and three times slipping back into a five-goal deficit. Prout led all scorers with seven points, on two goals and five assists. Zywicki finished with three points (1 goal, 2 assists) for the Stealth. Portland LumberJax at Calgary Roughnecks Calgary (2-2) opened the scoring with goals from Scott Ranger six minutes in and Lewis Ratcliff just about two minutes later, then held on for a 2-1 lead after Dan Dawson scored for the LumberJax late in the first quarter. Kelly Hall put the Roughnecks ahead 3-1 early in the second quarter, but Portland (0-3) soon tied the game, on goals by Scott Stapleford and Derek Malawsky. Hopefully, it felt good while it lasted, because Calgary ripped off five straight goals to end the first half. Ranger, Curt Malawsky, Ratcliff, Nolan Heavenor, and Hall all tallied for the Riggers before the break. Derek Malawsky scored to open the second half, pulling the LumberJax to within 8-4, but Calgary struck for another five-spot over the next 20 minutes (mostly the same scorers as before) and the rout was on. Late goals by Ryan Powell and Dawson made the score deceptively closer. In all, Portland scored just once in 34 minutes, spanning the middle of the second quarter to late in the fourth. Ratcliff had seven points (3 goals, 4 assists) to lead all scorers. Derek Malawsky tallied two goals and two assists in defeat. -30- |
