NLL Week Ten: Bandits hand Wings first lossBuffalo crushes Philly, 21-12; Rush nets first win, 9-7R.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of Week Ten, 29 February to 1 March 2008. (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.) New York Titans at Philadelphia Wings Iannucci netted the only goal for the first quarter, then Rob Van Beek scored five seconds into the second quarter to put Philadelphia (6-0) ahead 2-0. New York (4-5) rallied to take the lead by the six-minute mark, on goals by Casey Powell, Pat Maddalena and Mike McLellan. The Wings regained the lead by halftime, scoring three times in the final 4:06 of the half. Brendan Mundorf scored early in the third quarter to bring the Titans within one, at 6-5, and after Wings goals by Jake Bergey and Iannucci, New York tied the game at 8-8 -- Powell and McLellan again, this time sandwiching Jordan Hall. After late third-quarter goals by Jamie Rooney and Merrick Thomson, Philadelphia began to pull away in the fourth quarter, stringing together goals by Jason Crosbie, Iannucci (twice) and Thomas Hajek for a 14-9 lead. The Wings pushed the lead as far as 16-10 before coasting to victory. Iannucci led all scorers, tallying eight points (6 goals, 2 assists), although Bergey was sclose behind with seven (2 goals, 5 assists). Maddalena (3 goals, 4 assists) recorded seven points for the Titans. This was the league's annual Hall of Fame Game, coming one night after the class of 2008 (which included former Wings coach Tony Resch and former New York Saints goaltender Sal LoCascio) was inducted. Calgary Roughnecks at Toronto Rock Calgary (3-6) opened strong, taking a 3-1 lead after one quarter on goals by Jeff Shattler, Lewis Ratcliff and Scott Ranger. Toronto (5-3) got two goals in the second quarter, both by Manning, and pulled to within 4-3 at halftime. Kasey Beirnes scored less than a minute into the second half to tie the game, but Ranger responded quickly for the Riggers. Ratcliff and Ranger scored later in the period for Calgary, offsetting Rock goals by Aaron Wilson and Rob Marshall. Josh Sanderson tied the game at 7-7 eight minutes into the fourth quarter, and Manning put the Rock ahead with just 1:17. Marshall tacked on an insurance goal in the final seconds. Manning (3 goals, 1 assist) and Sanderson (1 goal, 3 assists) finished with four points each for Toronto. Ranger (3 goals, 1 assist) paced the Roughnecks offensively. Philadelphia Wings at Buffalo Bandits Philadelphia (6-1) got off to an excellent start, leading 2-0 after just 29 seconds, 4-0 a few minutes later, and 6-1 midway through the first quarter. Alas, it all fell apart after that for the NLL's last remaining unbeaten team. Buffalo (6-4) got the last four goals of the quarter, pulling to within 6-5, then rocked the Wings for eight goals in the second quarter and a 13-9 halftime lead. Buffalo continued its torrid pace in the third quarter, moving out to a 16-9 lead on goals by Delby Powless, Billy Dee Smith (a most unlikely candidate for a hat trick, which he did tonight), and Steenhuis. Merrick Thomson and Athan Iannucci scored later in the quarter for the Wings. After a long scoreless run to begin the fourth quarter, Buffalo strung together another three goals to put the game away. Steenhuis (4 goals, 6 assists) and Bomberry (3 goals, 7 assists) easily led all players in scoring, with Smith, Powless, and Roger Vyse all nailing down hat tricks. Iannucci (4 goals, 1 assist), in boosting his NLL-best goal total to 35, was among three Wings with five points. Rochester Knighthawks at Chicago Shamrox Shawn Evans personally opened up a 2-0 lead for Rochester (4-4) before Chris Schiller and Mat McLeod made it 4-0 after just four and a half minutes. Only a late Lindsay Plunkett goal saved Chicago (1-6) from being shut out for the quarter. Things got only marginally better for the Shamrox in the second quarter, allowing three Rochester goals before Mike Kirk found net with 1:55 left to cut the Knighthawks' lead to 7-2. Grant scored three times in the third quarter and assisted on two others, all part of a 7-1 run that turned the game into a football score, 14-3. Rather than punt, though, the Shamrox went for it on fourth down, er, in the fourth quarter, scoring three goals (two by Bobby McBride) to make the score seem much less lopsided. Despite his ten-point night, Grant was outdone on the scoresheet by Evans (4 goals, 7 assists) and Shawn Williams (3 goals, 8 assists). McBride (2 goals, 1 assist), Plunkett (2 goals, 1 assist), and Jason Clark (3 assists) each had three points for Chicago. Edmonton Rush at Portland LumberJax Edmonton (1-6) got off to a flying start in what became its first win of 2008, as Jimmy Quinlan and Dan Stroup each scored in the first 90 seconds. Another Quinlan goal made the score 3-1 by mid-quarter, but Peter Morgan scored a short time later to cut the deficit to a single goal. Portland (3-6) tied the game seconds into the second period, Brodie Merrill from Dan Dawson, but Steve Hutchins soon countered for the Rush. Matt Holman tied the game again at 7:38, but A.J. Shannon scored late to put the Rush ahead at intermission, 5-4. Chris Gill and Shannon strung together goals early in the third quarter, extending Edmonton's lead to 7-4. Merrill and Dawson each scored later in the period, but Gill provided some breathing room with a goal at 13:48. The teams played deep into the fourth quarter at 6-4, until Shannon delivered with 2:30 to play. Holman brought the Lumberjax back within two goals with 35 seconds left, but it wasn't enough. Shannon finished with three goals, but was outdone in points by Hutchins (1 goal, 5 assists), Stroup (1 goal, 4 assists) and Gill (2 goals, 2 assists). Powell placed the LumberJax with a goal and four assists. -30- |
