NLL Week Eleven: Bandits rally past SwarmStealth over Tusks for first-place tie; Rock-Wings postponed by weatherR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of Week Eleven, 8 March 2008. (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.) Toronto Rock at Philadelphia Wings Severe weather in the Toronto area has prevented the Rock from flying to Philadelphia for the game. "It's unfortunate that we have to postpone the game," Wings president Russ Cline said. "It's virtually impossible for the Rock to arrive in Philadelphia in a timely manner for our scheduled game." A new date for the game is expected to be announced on Monday. Based on the teams' shared open dates and Wachovia Center availability, the game likely will be played in April. Tickets for Saturday's game will be honored on the new date or may be exchanged, at the Wachovia Center box office, for tickets to one of the Wings' other two remaining home dates. Philadelphia leads the Eastern Division with a 6-1 record. Toronto is third, at 5-3. Minnesota Swarm at Buffalo Bandits Chad Culp scored less than two minutes in, giving Minnesota (6-3) an early lead, but the Bandits fired back with goals by Clay Hill and Dan Teat for a 2-1 advantage after one quarter. Ryan Ward and Culp teamed up to put the Swarm ahead, 3-2, midway through the second quarter before Roger Vyse and Delby Powless countered for Buffalo (7-4). Sean Pollock scored for Minnesota with four minutes left in the half, tying the game at 4-4. After newly-acquired Keith Cromwell scored early in the third quarter, Buffalo rallied to take a two-goal lead, Powless scoring twice and John Tavares adding a single. After three quarters, 7-5. Buffalo ran away with the victory early in the fourth quarter, stringing together another three goals -- Mark Steenhuis, Tavares and Hill -- for a 10-5 lead. Dan Marohl, making his Swarm debut, scored moments later and Culp added one after that, but the Swarm rally ended then and there. Powless (3 goals, 3 assists) led the Bandits offensively with six points. Culp (3 goals, 1 assist) and Ward (1 goal, 3 assists) had four points each for the Swarm. San Jose Stealth at Colorado Mammoth Colorado (5-3) held a 2-1 lead after one quarter on late-period goals by Nick Carlson and Gavin Prout, but allowed the Stealth to tie the game twice in the opening minutes of the second quarter. San Jose (5-3) finally got rolling midway through the second quarter when Resetarits and Wiles combined to turn a one-goal deficit into a 6-4 halftime lead. The Stealth continued building its lead throughout the third quarter, going ahead 8-4 by mid-quarter and opening a 10-5 lead by the end of the period. Led by Jamie Shewchuk (a goal and two assists in the run), Colorado forged a comeback early in the fourth quarter, coming as close as 10-8. Old standbys Colin Doyle and Jeff Zywicki finished the job for San Jose, establishing the four-goal margin of victory. Wiles (3 goals, 4 assists) and Zywicki (2 goals, 5 assists) posted the game-high in points, seven. Shewchuk finished with four points (1 goal, 3 assists) to pace the Mammoth, which has now lost three straight. Portland LumberJax at Calgary Roughnecks Toth and Tracey Kelusky scored early for Calgary (4-6), but the LumberJax tied the game four minutes later on goals by Matt Holman and Ryan Powell. A late Ratcliff goal gave the Riggers the lead at the quarter mark, 3-2. Portland (3-7) scored three goals to begin the second quarter, taking a 5-3 lead and staying a step in front until just before halftime, when Scott Ranger and Toth teamed up to tie the game at 7-7. Calgary continued its offensive explosion after the break, with Ratcliff and Mike Carnegie staking the Riggers to a 9-7 lead. Kelusky, Ratcliff and Ranger later strung together three goals and the Roughnecks led 12-9 with one period to play. Dan Dawson scored early in the fourth quarter for Portland, cutting the deficit to 12-10, but the Roughnecks scored the next three goals to put the game out of reach. Ratcliff (3 goals, 3 assists), Kelusky (2 goals, 4 assists) and Ranger (2 goals, 4 assists) all had six points for Calgary. Powell (2 goals, 4 assists) reached the same mark for Portland. -30- |
