NLL Week Sixteen: Iannucci breaks the recordDespite 3 goals by 'AI', Wings lose to Swarm; Stealth alone atop WestR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of Week Sixteen, 11-13 April 2008. (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.) Philadelphia Wings at Portland LumberJax After Portland (5-9) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, Iannucci scored twice in succession, once in the first quarter and once in the second and the Wings eventually had the game tied, 4-4, five minutes into the second quarter. Dan Dawson scored five minutes later for a 5-4 LumberJax lead, then completed a natural hat trick by scoring twice to start the third quarter. Philadelphia (9-4) clawed back with three of its own (Jason Crosbie, Jamie Rooney and Jake Bergey), tying the game at 7-7. Dawson again scored late to snap the tie, then Cory Conway added a goal 27 seconds into the fourth quarter. The 9-7 lead soon evaporated, with Iannucci scoring twice in just over two minutes. Following a Dawson goal, Iannucci scored another pair, giving the Wings their first lead, 11-10. Merrick Thomson and Brett Moyer added late insurance goals for Philadelphia. Iannucci led all scorers with eight points, on six goals and two assists, and now has 60 goals for the season, one shy of Gary Gait's single-season record. Dawson finished with six goals and an assist for Portland. Chicago Shamrox at Toronto Rock Toronto (7-7) grabbed a 3-0 lead by mid-quarter, courtesy of goals by Blaine Manning, Derek Suddons and Lewis Ratcliff. Chicago (5-7) fired back with five by the end of the period, taking a two-goal lead. A Rock goal by Ryan Benesch tied the game at 6-6 midway through the second quarter. Jason Clark put the Shamrox back in front a few minutes later, but Benesch soon tied the game again. Goals by Manning and Kasey Beirnes early in the third quarter put the Rock on top, 9-7, but Chicago quickly rallied for a 10-9 lead within five minutes. A late exchange of goals made it 11-10 in favor of Chicago. Suddons tied the game a minute into the fourth period, then Manning put the Rock ahead with 6:46 to play. Brad Self tied the game a minute later, though, setting the stage for Giles' game-winner in sudden death. Clark finished with seven points (2 goals, 5 assists) to lead all scorers. Manning (3 goals, 3 assists) and Ratcliff (1 goal, 5 assists) paced the Rock with six points each. Buffalo Bandits at Rochester Knighthawks Evans' first goal came just over a minute into the game, giving Rochester (7-7) a 1-0 lead that lasted until late in the first quarter, when the teams combined for three goals in five minutes. Evans netted two more goals in the second quarter, bookending a John Grant goal for a 5-2 lead. John Tavares scored moments later for Buffalo (8-6), but a Steve Toll tally with 27 seconds left in the half restored the Knighthawks' three-goal lead. Pat McCready scored for Buffalo five minutes into the third quarter, but the Bandits soon allowed Evans to take the goal back. The Knighthawks then netted three goals to begin the fourth quarter, putting the game out of reach. Grant (3 goals, 4 assists) and Shawn Williams (2 goals, 5 assists) had seven points each for Rochester. McCready paced the Bandits with two goals and an assist. Philadelphia Wings at Minnesota Swarm The second of Iannucci's three goals was his 62nd of the season, breaking the single-season record that had been held by Gary Gait. Philadelphia (9-5) jumped out to a 3-1 lead after five minutes, then surrendered nine straight goals to close out the first half. Ryan Ward, Chad Culp and Andy Secore all scored twice in the Swarm's big run. One player who didn't score in the first half was the aforementioned Iannucci, held in check by the Minnesota (9-4) defense. He made his move midway through the third quarter, tying and then breaking the goal-scoring record as part of a six-goal Philadelphia run. What had been a 10-3 halftime deficit was down to just 11-10 by the start of the fourth quarter, and the Wings finished the rally when Iannucci (who else?) scored with 5:33 left, for a 12-12 tie. A David Mitchell goal three and a half minutes later put the Wings ahead, 14-13, but Dan Marohl forced overtime with a six-on-five goal in the closing seconds of regulation and Sean Pollock scored the game-winner 1:19 into overtime. Iannucci and Secore led all players in scoring, booking identical three-goal, three-assist games. Colorado Mammoth at New York Titans New York (7-6) held the early lead, 2-0, on goals by Brendan Mundorf and McLellan, but Colorado (7-6) went ahead with a minute and a half left in the first quarter, when Gavin Prout snapped a 2-2 tie. The upstart Titans successfully prevented momentum from swinging to the perennially-contending Mammoth, scoring seven goals in the second quarter (to Colorado's one) for a commanding 9-4 halftime lead. For Colorado, it got worse (a Jeff Ratcliffe goal 27 seconds into the second half) before it got better (mid-quarter goals by Jed Prossner and Chris Gill) -- and then McLellan and Mundorf struck again, putting the Titans ahead by a 12-6 score. By the time Colorado started cutting into New York's lead, only two minutes remained in regulation, not nearly enough time to challenge the Titans in their first home game since early February. Colorado's Jamie Shewchuk led all scorers with seven points, entirely on assists. Mundorf and Casey Powell had two goals and four assists each for the Titans. Edmonton Rush at Calgary Roughnecks Edmonton (4-8) began strong, moving out to a 4-2 lead midway through the first quarter with two goals from Dan Stroup and singles by Jimmy Quinlan and Mike Hominuck. Suddenly, though, the Rush lost its way, allowing two Tracey Kelusky goals as the Roughnecks rallied for a 5-4 lead after one quarter. Curt Malawsky extended the lead to 7-4 five minutes into the second quarter and Calgary (5-9) kept adding to it, going ahead 10-5 with 90 seconds left in the first half. A Quinlan goal just before intermission did not provide much momentum for Edmonton; in fact, it ended all momentum, as neither team scored in the third quarter. Stroup scored early in the fourth, cutting the deficit to a manageable 10-7, but the Roughnecks countered with an 8-0 run to end the game. Jeff Shattler and Nolan Heavenor scored twice in the quarter, with Toth (among others) scoring once. Toth easily lead all scorers with nine points (4 goals, 5 assists). Stroup (4 goals, 1 assist) and Hominuck (1 goal, 4 assists) tallied five points each for the Rush. Edmonton Rush at San Jose Stealth Much like in last night's loss in Calgary, Edmonton (4-9) stayed close throughout the first quarter, trailing just 3-2 after fifteen minutes. Also like last night, the Rush started to fall off the pace in the second quarter, as San Jose (8-6) scored four times for a 7-4 halftime lead. Tom Johnson scored twice in the third quarter for the Stealth, with Frank Resetarits and Eric Martin adding singles, as San Jose furthered its lead to 11-5 by the end of the third quarter. The Stealth added a Kyle Sorensen goal early in the fourth, then killed off most of the remaining time before a meaningless Rush goal by Mike Grimes and an even more meaningless tally by the Stealth's Gary Rosyski. Resetarits and Johnson posted identical two-goal, three-assist showing for the Stealth, while Mike Hominuck (2 goals, 1 assist) and Dan Teat (1 goal, 2 assists) tallied three points each for the Rush. -30- |
