NLL Week Fifteen: Riggers clinch #1 overall seedBandits fail to lock up Eastern crown; Portland, San Jose get inR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of Week Fifteen, 10-11 April 2009. (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.) Rochester Knighthawks at Buffalo Bandits Down 7-6 in the third quarter, Buffalo (10-4) rattled off four straight goals to take the lead for good. The victory clinches a home playoff game for the Bandits, who can lock up the Eastern Division title with a win tomorrow at New York. Both Accursi and Vyse finished with three goals and an assist, one point behind John Tavares (2 goals, 3 assists) for the game high. Shawn Williams finished with two goals and two assists for Rochester (6-8). Portland LumberJax at Calgary Roughnecks Tied 8-8 after three quarters, Portland (8-6) got goals from Ryan Powell and Dan Stroup to open a two-goal lead. Curt Malawsky scored with 2:39 left, cutting the deficit to one, but Stewart put the game away late. Peter Morgan led the LumberJax offensively, netting six points on two goals and four assists. Josh Sanderson had a goal and five assists for Calgary (10-4). Portland clinches a playoff spot with a victory, and also keeps alive a slim chance at taking first place in the Western Division. Calgary claims the crown with a win or one Portland loss. Toronto Rock at Philadelphia Wings Toronto (5-10) led 12-9 midway through the third quarter, but sagged defensively as the Wings rallied for a 12-12 tie with fifteen minutes to play. The Rock again went ahead, 14-13, on goals by Kasey Beirnes and Bill McGlone, but Philadelphia (7-8) closed out the game on a 3-0 run. Thomson led all scorers, tallying eight points on three goals and five assists. Craig Conn had two goals and four assists for the Rock, which was eliminated from playoff contention with the loss. Buffalo Bandits at New York Titans After conceding New York (9-6) a 4-0 lead after one quarter, Buffalo (10-5) stormed back to score the next six goals -- two each by John Tavares, Mike Accursi and Mark Steenhuis. Powell scored just before halftime, cutting the Bandits' lead to 6-5, then took control after Buffalo stretched its lead to three goals early in the third quarter. Powell scored twice and dished out three assists as the Titans finished the game on a 7-1 run. Powell finished with nine points total (4 goals, 5 assists), enough to lead all scorers. Tavares paced the Bandits with five points (3 goals, 2 assists). The loss prevented Buffalo from clinching first place in the Eastern Division. Rochester Knighthawks at Boston Blazers Rochester (6-9) had pulled to within 5-4 early in the third quarter, but Boston (9-6) netted the next five goals. During the Blazers' offensive run, goaltender Anthony Cosmo held the Knighthawks scoreless for almost 22 minutes. Daryl Veltman had the game high in points, six, on two goals and four assists. Shawn Williams had four assists for the Knighthawks. Portland LumberJax at Minnesota Swarm The difference in the score can be traced to an eight-goal second quarter by Portland (9-6), which secured a home playoff game with the victory. Morgan and Scott Stewart each scored twice in the period, which put the LumberJax ahead 11-6 at intermission. Minnesota (6-9) didn't get closer than four until a four-goal spurt in the fourth quarter made it 16-13. Cory Conway (2 goals, 5 assists), Brodie Merrill (1 goal, 6 assists) and Ryan Powell (1 goal, 6 assists) had seven points each for Portland. Kevin Buchanan (3 goals, 4 assists) reached the same total for the Swarm. San Jose Stealth at Colorado Mammoth San Jose (7-8) had to rally three times in the fourth quarter just to force overtime, starting with an 8-6 deficit to open the period. A Chris Gill tally, his fourth of the game (leading the Mammoth offensively), with 52 seconds remaining in regulation put Colorado (6-9) ahead, 10-9. Colin Doyle tied the game 30 seconds later, on a feed by Duch, to force the extra period. Duch (5 goals, 3 assists) finished with the game high in points, breaking Gavin Prout's rookie scoring record in the process (Prout had 82 points in 2002; Duch has 86 with one game left). Doyle added three goals and four assists, the latter number pushing him to a record-tying 71 for the season; Josh Sanderson had 71 assists for Toronto in 2005. Calgary Roughnecks at Edmonton Rush The victory assures Calgary (11-4) of home-floor advantage throughout the playoffs. Edmonton (5-10) led 8-5 midway through the second quarter, but Calgary rallied to tie the game at 10-10 by the end of the third period. A Kelusky goal four minutes into the fourth quarter put the Riggers ahead by two, 13-11, and the Rush never came closer than a goal the rest of the way. Kelusky finished with eight points, on four goals and four assists. Ryan Benesch (3 goals, 2 assists) and Dan Teat (2 goals, 3 assists) each tallied five points for the Rush. -30- |
