NLL Week Sixteen: Mammoth, K'Hawks grab final spotsTitans clinch first place in Eastern DivisionR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of Week Sixteen, 17-18 April 2009. (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.) Edmonton Rush at Colorado Mammoth Edmonton (5-11) led for long portions of the game, beginning with an Andy Secore natural hat trick to take a 4-1 lead. Secore scored again for the only tally of the third quarter, putting the Rush up, 6-5. Colorado (7-9) stormed back with five goals in the final period, including the pairs from Prout and Shewchuk. Secore led all scorers with six points, on four goals and two assists. Shewchuk (2 goals, 2 assists), Prout (2 goals, 2 assists), and Gary Rosyski (1 goal, 3 assists) all had four points for the Mammoth. The victory secures the final Western Division playoff berth for Colorado. Calgary Roughnecks at Portland LumberJax In a game that meant nothing to the playoff seeding of either team, Calgary (12-4) -- which clinched the top overall playoff seed last weekend -- turned a 2-1 deficit late in the first quarter into an 8-2 lead at halftime. Portland (9-7), assured of the second seed in the Western Division playoffs, rallied to within two goals twice in the second half, but stalled out both times. Josh Sanderson finished with eight points for Calgary, on a goal and seven assists. Peter Morgan (2 goals, 1 assist) was among four players with three points for the LumberJax. San Jose Stealth at Toronto Rock Down 6-3 early in the second quarter, Toronto (6-10) took command of the game with an 11-1 run that spanned 31 minutes of game action. San Jose (7-9) scored four of the next five goals, but it wasn't nearly enough to catch the Rock -- not that it mattered, with the Stealth's playoff seed locked in and the Rock already eliminated from postseason contention. Luke Wiles (2 goals, 4 assists) and Blaine Manning (1 goal, 5 assists) finished with six points each for Toronto, while Jeff Zywicki (4 goals, 2 assists) reached the same plateau for the Stealth. Boston Blazers at Buffalo Bandits Morris' goal completed a madcap comeback for Boston (10-6), which trailed 10-5 three minutes into the third quarter. Two goals by Morris in the period -- along with singles from Daryl Veltman, Dan Dawson and Brendan Thenhaus -- brought the Blazers even with Buffalo (10-6). Boston led for most of the fourth quarter after goals by Veltman and Thenhaus gave them a 12-11 lead, but John Tavares struck late in regulation to force sudden death. Veltman (4 goals, 3 assists) and Morris (3 goals, 4 assists) finished with seven points for Boston, while Tavares (4 goals, 3 assists) and Mike Acurrsi (3 goals, 4 assists) did the same for Buffalo. With New York's win at Minnesota, Buffalo falls to the second seed in the East and will host Boston again two weeks from tonight in an Eastern Division semifinal. Philadelphia Wings at Rochester Knighthawks With the victory, Rochester (7-9) claims the final Eastern Division playoff spot. Philadelphia (7-9) is eliminated on the basis of a poorer divisional record. The Wings went ahead 6-4 early in the third quarter before goals by Jamie Rooney and Jason Henhawk tied the score. Gary Gait and Craig Point then each scored twice for a 10-6 lead. Mat Giles scored a pair in the fourth quarter, bringing Philadelphia within two, but the Wings could get no closer. Shawn Williams had seven points (7 assists) to lead Rochester. The Wings were paced by three goals and two assists by Giles. New York Titans at Minnesota Swarm Combined with Buffalo's overtime loss to Boston earlier this evening, New York (10-6) clinches first place in the Eastern Division with the victory. It didn't come easy for the Titans, who surrendered a natural hat trick to Kevin Ross in the second quarter and trailed 6-4 at halftime. A 5-1 run by New York to begin the second half resulted in a 9-7 lead, but goals by Sean Pollock late in the third and Dan Marohl three minutes into the fourth tied the score at 9-9. Powell led all scorers with seven points, on a goal and six assists. Pollock paced the Swarm, scoring two goals and dishing out four assists for a total of six points. -30- |
