Roughnecks hold off Titans for second NLL titleCalgary wins, 12-10, to claim first Champion's Cup since 2004R.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Mike Carnegie and Bruce Codd scored in the final minute of regulation Friday night, allowing the Calgary Roughnecks to hold off a late charge by the New York Titans and post a 12-10 victory in the National Lacrosse League championship game. A crowd of 13,042 was on hand at the Saddledome to see the hometown Roughnecks win their second NLL Champion's Cup in five years. Calgary led for most of the game, but -- until the final seconds -- never by a margin that made the outcome seem certain. The Roughnecks only had a three-goal lead once all game, and it lasted less than a minute. Credit the Titans, a third-year team making its first title-game appearance, for keeping the game close throughout. In fact, New York slipped out to an early lead when Pat Maddalena scored 91 seconds after the opening faceoff. Tracey Kelusky scored a few minutes later, and Curt Malawsky put Calgary ahead with a goal just past the nine-minute mark. Brendan Mundorf, who assisted on Maddalena's goal, tied the score at 2-2 moments later on a feed from Ryan Boyle, and the first quarter ended with the teams still deadlocked. Jeff Schattler broke the tie a minute and a half into the second quarter, and the Roughnecks extended their lead to 4-2 several minutes later on a goal by Dan Dobbie. Casey Powell, the centerpiece of the Titans' attack all season, got one of the goals back at mid-quarter and Matt Alrich snagged the other one three minutes before intermission. Calgary, though, struck for two goals in the final 31 seconds of the first half, Josh Sanderson from Kaleb Toth and Toth, unassisted, with under a second to go. Six-to-four, Riggers. New York battled back to tie the game, 7-7, seconds into the fourth quarter, but the Roughnecks replied with three goals over the next seven minutes; Scott Ranger, Codd and Sanderson each lit the lamp during the run. Powell -- as he has done several times this season, most recently two weeks ago in a first-round playoff game against Rochester -- took control, scoring a man-up goal at 8:15 and an even-strength tally four minutes later, dragging the Titans to within 10-9. That set up a flurry of final-minute goals, including the aforementioned tallies by Carnegie and Codd. Boyle scored eight seconds later for New York, but the Titans couldn't muster any more offense. Powell finished with four goals and two assists in defeat, a six-point showing matched only by Toth's one goal and five assists for the Roughnecks. Among several players to finish with five points was Sanderson (2 goals, 3 assists), who was named Game MVP. This is the second championship for the Roughnecks, who also won in 2004. The only two offensive holdovers from the last title-winning team posted errily similar stats in this one -- Toth had a goal and four assists against Buffalo that night, while Kelusky had a goal and an assist (1 goal, 2 assists tonight). -30- |
