NLL Week Twelve: Stealth clinches playoff berth

Washington sweeps Colorado; Orlando drops Rock into second-place tie

Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of Week Twelve, 26-27 March 2010. (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.)


Washington Stealth at Colorado Mammoth
Friday, 9:00 PM - Pepsi Center

Lewis Ratcliff scored three third-quarter goals, part of an eight-goal outburst in the period, as the Stealth battled past the Mammoth, 15-14.

Ratcliff scored a couple goals early in the second quarter, but Colorado (2-8) netted more goals in the first half, converting three Alex Gajic goals into an 8-5 halftime lead.

Washington (8-3) restored order with eight goals in the third, turning the three-goal deficit into a 13-11 lead.

The Stealth remained a goal or two ahead of the Mammoth the rest of the game, although Gajic made things interesting by netting a penalty shot goal with 25 seconds left, bringing to Tusks to within a goal.

Gajic (6 goals, 1 assist) and Washington's Luke Wiles (2 goals, 5 assists) tied for the game high in scoring, tallying seven points each.



Minnesota Swarm at Calgary Roughnecks

The Swarm scored seven fourth-quarter goals to push past the Roughnecks, 17-13.

Through the first three quarters, Minnesota (5-5) never held better than a one-goal lead, while Calgary (6-5) had a two-goal advantage for barely more than three minutes.

Tied at 10-10 headed to the fourth quarter, though, the Swarm's offense came to life in a big way. Aaron Wilson and Kevin Ross staked the Swarm to an early two-goal lead, then Jay Thorimbert, Ryan Benesch and Callum Crawford strung together consecutive goals.

Benesch finished with a game-high eleven points, scoring two goals and dishing out nine assists. Dan Dobbie paced the Riggers, scoring five goals and adding one assist.



Boston Blazers at Philadelphia Wings

Drew Westervelt scored three goals as the Wings doused the Blazers, 13-7.

A pair of first-quarter goals by Dan Dawson helped Boston (6-6) to a 3-2 lead after one quarter and a 5-4 halftime advantage.

Philadelphia (4-8) tied the game seven seconds into the third quarter, Geoff Snider to Bill McGlone, and the Wings were flying.

Ahead 8-6 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Wings netted another five goals (with Westervelt and Snider among the scorers) while Brandon Miller held the Blazers to just one goal.

Westervelt led the Wings offensively, netting three goals and dishing out four assists. Dawson had two goals and three assists for the Blazers.



Toronto Rock at Orlando Titans

Casey Powell scored twice, including the game-winner, as the Titans downed the Rock, 10-8.

After Orlando (7-4) tallied the only goal of the first quarter (Jesse Guerin), Toronto (6-6) countered with three straight to open the second period and took a 4-3 lead to intermission.

Stephen Leblanc scored late in the third quarter for Toronto, tying the score at 6-6, then Colin Doyle netted a goal 46 seconds into the fourth to put the Rock ahead by one.

Back came the Titans, Stephen Peyser and Mike McLellan each scoring less than a minute later. Powell later snapped an 8-8 tie with a goal at 10:47 and Chet Koneczny added an insurance goal in the final minute.

Powell had seven points (2 goals, 5 assists) for Orlando, while Doyle tallied five points (2 goals, 3 assists) for the Rock, which has now lost five straight games.



Buffalo Bandits at Rochester Knighthawks

Mike Accursi scored three of the Bandits' ten first-half goals in a 14-7 thrashing of the Knighthawks.

Buffalo (6-6) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, extended it to 5-2 by the end of the first quarter, and added another five goals in the second for a 10-4 halftime lead.

Rochester (5-6) made a small run in the third quarter, pulling to within 11-7 -- goals by Shawn Williams, Craig Point and Bobby McBride -- but was held scoreless by Bandits netminder Mike Thompson over the final 19 minutes.

Mark Steenhuis finished with eight points (3 goals, 5 assists) for Buffalo, while Williams (3 goals, 2 assists) and Shawn Evans (5 assists) had five points each for the K'Hawks.



Minnesota Swarm at Edmonton Rush

Dean Hill scored three goals, leading the Swarm to a 16-14 victory over the Swarm.

Callum Crawford scored to put Minnesota (5-6) ahead early, but the Rush replied with the next six goals, an avalanche of offense that decided an otherwise close contest.

Minnesota pulled to within 10-7 by halftime and narrowed the deficit to two goals on several occasions in the second half, but Edmonton (7-4) pulled away every time.

Aaron Wilson had eight points (2 goals, 6 assists) in defeat; Ryan Ward scored two goals and dished out five assists for the winning Rush.



Colorado Mammoth at Washington Stealth
Saturday, 10:30 PM - Comcast Arena

Lewis Ratcliff exploded for six goals, guiding the Stealth to a 12-9 victory over the Mammoth.

Ratcliff's big night also secured a weekend sweep of lowly Colorado (2-9) and guaranteed the Stealth a trip to the playoffs.

After the Mammoth took a 2-1 lead early, Washington (9-3) rounded into form in the second quarter and (behind Ratcliff) exploded for four goals in the third.

The Stealth carried a 9-6 lead deep into the fourth quarter before the clubs combined for six goals in the final three minutes. Not until Jeff Zywicki scored with 21 seconds left could Washington breathe a sigh of relief.

Ratcliff finished with seven points, adding an assist to his six goals. Jed Prossner (4 goals, 1 assist) and Derek Malawsky (5 assists) each scored five points for Colorado.
