Saints' late rally leaves Bandits feeling chilled
by Tom Borrelli Buffalo News
Playing at home continues to be as despressing as the weather for the Buffalo Bandits.
The New York Saints dominated three quarters of the game and posted a 13-12 National Lacrosse League win over the Buffalo Bandits Saturday night before a crowd of 8,536 who braved a snowstorm.
New York (3-4) scored five of the game's last six goals, with Matt Panetta's power-play score with 3:10 left breaking the fifth and final tie. Mark Million had five goals and three assists who had lost three straight games against the Bandits.
Buffalo (4-4), now 1-3 at home this season got four goals and four assists from John Tavares and three goals apiece from Darris Kilgour and Craig Stevenson.
New York enjoyed a whopping 62-39 advantage in shots on goal and would have cruised to a easy victory if not for Buffalo's 8-1 scoring spree in the second quarter. New York outscored Buffalo 7-3 in the second half. Take away the second quarter, and the Saints outscored the Bandits 12-4.
The Saints won without All-Star Sal LoCascio. Greg Cattrano made his first career start and racked up 27 saves. The Bandits dominated the second quarter to turn a 5-1 deflicit after one period into a 9-6 lead at intermission. Buffalo scored the first five goals of the second quarter and the last three.
Tavares had three goals in the quarter and Kilgour had two.
Millon had two goals in the first quarter as the Saints scored the last four goals of the period.
The Bandits get their final bye of the season next week before finishing up a three game homestand with tilts against Rochester on 20 March and Toronto on 27 March.
