beats Bandits in OT

Buffalo News

Another former Buffalo Bandit put the nails in the coffin against his ex-teammates Saturday night.

Jim Veltman scored six seconds into overtime to give the Toronto Rock a 13-12 win over the Bandits before 10,723 at Marine Midland Arena.

Veltman had five goals and two assists for Toronto (7-3) and Russ Heard added three goals. Jamie Batley had three goals to lead Buffalo (4-6).

John Tavares forced overtime when he tied it for Buffalo at 12-12 with 2:46 left after Heard gave Toronto a 12-11 lead when he scored with 6:58 remaining.

Toronto tied it at 11-11 with 9:51 left on Kim Squire's goal.

Buffalo wasted no time claiming an 11-10 lead on John Rosa's goal with 12:06 left.

Toronto tied it at 10-10 on Squire's goal with 12:23 remaining, off a gorgeous assist from Veltman.

Veltman's fourth goal of the night brought Toronto within 10-9, with 13:38 left.

Buffalo withstood a three-goal Toronto charge in the third quarter to take a 10-8 lead into the final period.

Tavares' power play goal, which he scored from his knees with 1:38 left restored Buffalo's two-goal margin.

Toronto got goals from Dan Stroup, Colin Doyle and Chris Gill during a stretch of 1:44 to turn a 9-5 deficit to 9-8.

Batley and Travis Kilgour scored the first two goals of the third quarter for the Bandits. Batley's came with Buffalo short-handed and in the midst of successfully kiling a two-man Toronto power play.

Goaltender Marty O'Neill was the story of the first half for the Bandits, who took a 7-5 lead to intermission.

O'Neill, who made his first start since 30 January, had been backing up rookie Matt Disher over the last four games. But he played the fourth quarter of last Saturday's 17-11 loss to Rochester and got the call against the Rock. O'Neill faced 31 shots in the first half, and made 26 saves.

His Bandits teammates did their part, chasing Rock starting goalie Rob Blaisdell early in the second quarter. former Buffalo Gambler Bob Watson replaced Blaisdell with the Bandits ahead, 6-3, just 55 seconds into the second period.

Mike Benedict's second goal of the game, on a power play, was the score that chased Blaisdell.

Toronto managed a pair of power-play goals by Veltman that bracketed Batley's second goal of the game.

The Bandits scored the last three goals of the first quarter, to lead 5-3, after the first 15 minutes.

Batley scored on a hidden ball play with 1:08 left in the period to make it 5-3. Most of the Rock followed Steve Fannell down the right side of the floor but Batley stunned Blaisdell when he fired the ball from the left side of the goalie.

Newcomer Steve Kisslinger's rebound goal of his own shot had given the Bandits their first lead of the night, at 4-3, with 2:20 left. Benedict and Kisslinger joined the Bandits in a three-way trade with New York Syracuse on Thursday.

Neil Doddridge's power-play goal, with 5:44 remaining, started Buffalo's three goal flurry that ended the first quarter.

Veltman had put Toronto in front 3-2, on a short-handed goal with 6:38 left, just 1:10 after Benedict's first goal had tied the game at 2-2.

Darris Kilgour broke the ice for Buffal with 10:11 left when he abused Toronto's Terry Bullen on a one-on-one isolation, then beat Blaisdell.

Buffalo travels to Rochester next Saturday and to Syracuse on 10 April. Toronto hosts Baltimore, in a battle for first place, Friday, and finishes the regular season on 9 April, at New York.
