  TO THE NATIONAL LACROSSE LEAGUE

Game Preview 2 April 1999

Toronto to host first-place showdown

NLL Press Release

Historic Maple Leaf Gardens has played host to many memorable sporting events over the years, and tomorrow night’s National Lacrosse League game will surely be added to that list. The Toronto Rock and Baltimore Thunder face-off at 7 PM Friday night in a battle of the NLL’s top two teams. Like any one of those other great battles, this one has its subplots.

While both teams have clinched playoff spots at 7-3, it’s Toronto’s 5-0 mark at home which stands out, considering no other NLL team this year has gone unbeaten in their own building. But, the Thunder already own a decisive 21-10 win over the Rock from Week Three of this season in Baltimore. A win by Toronto, winners of their last three overall, guarantees a home playoff game in two weeks. The Thunder, meanwhile, want to guarantee the hold on first place that they’ve held exclusively or been tied for all season (with the exception of the league’s first weekend when just one game took place, not involving Baltimore).

Another team in the first place picture is the Rochester Knighthawks. They can stay within one game of the top spot -- tied with the loser of tomorrow night’s game -- by defeating Buffalo at home on Saturday night. More importantly, a Knighthawk victory would clinch a playoff spot. It won’t be easy though as the Bandits themselves are fighting to stay alive in the chase for the final two post-season berths. Buffalo however, has lost three in a row, including two weeks ago at home to Rochester. This is the first game for both teams since the two completed a blockbuster trade prior to this past Sunday’s trade deadline which saw each team’s second leading scorer dealt.

The other two teams battling with the Knighthawks and Bandits for the final two playoff spots get back together on Saturday night at the First Union Center. In last weekend’s game between the Wings and Saints, New York ended a three-game winning streak by Philadelphia on a penalty shot with 1.3 seconds left in the game for a 14-13 win which, coupled with another Saints’ victory the next night in Syracuse, put New York alone in fourth place, one game behind Rochester, but just one game ahead of the Wings (and Buffalo).

Saturday night’s other contest is a battle of the brothers. The Thunder wrap up their thirteenth season with their second game in as many nights, hosting the Syracuse Smash. The game pits Baltimore’s Gary Gait against twin brother Paul, and the Thunder’s John Fay against his older brother Ed. Though the Smash are 2-8 and Baltimore will enter the night either in first place or one-game out of first, Syracuse defeated the Thunder 15-14 on 5 February at the Onondaga County War Memorial. Unfortunately for the Smash, they are 0-11 lifetime in games played away from that building.

Goalies Bob Watson and Rob Blasdell each saw action in each of Toronto’s two games last weekend.

Injuries:

Toronto will wrap up their regular season next Friday night at New York... Toronto signed forward Steve Toll on Wednesday...

      Television:
          Philadelphia: Comcast SportsNet (LIVE)
      Radio:
          None.
      Netcast:

      New York 5-5
      Philadelphia 4-6

Key Players:
New York: Chris Panos, acquired via trade from Buffalo on 25 March, notched six points in his first two games with the Saints last weekend. Matt Panetta has shattered his personal one-season highs for goals, assists, and points in one season. He began his career with Philadelphia in 1992. Third-year pro Darren Lowe has also set new marks in each of those three categories.
Philadelphia: Jake Bergey was named Wednesday as NLL Player of the Month, having totaled nine goals and 16 assists in three games in March. Goalie Dallas Eliuk had an .815 save percentage during that same period. Tom Marechek is enjoying his fourth straight 50+ points season.

Injuries:
          New York: None reported.
Philadelphia: Chris Flynn -- has been cleared to play following arthroscopic knee surgery, but will not play this weekend...

Notable:
It’s "Fan Appreciation Night" at the First Union Center as the Wings close the season on the road (next Saturday at Rochester)... Last Friday’s win was New York’s first at home against the Wings since February of 1994... Despite the unit’s 40 percent efficiency (2 for 5) last week versus the Saints, Philadelphia’s power play is still ranked last in the league (.317)... New York is the least penalized team in the league... The Wings are 7-4 lifetime at home versus the Saints in regular season play, including last year’s 15-14 New York win on 21 March...

Tickets:
At the First Union Center box office and all Ticketmaster locations throughout the Delaware Valley.

Buffalo Bandits at Rochester Knighthawks
Game time: Saturday, 7:35 PM
Game site: Blue Cross Arena

Broadcast Info.:
      Television:
          None.
      Radio:
          Rochester: WHTK-AM (1280)
      Netcast:
          None.

Records:
      Buffalo 4-6
      Rochester 6-4

Key Players:
Buffalo: Craig Stevenson had three goals and one assist and won 17 face-offs when the two teams met in Buffalo two weeks ago. He was a runner-up for the NLL Rookie of the Month award for March. Team captain Rich Kilgour and younger brother Travis will be facing their brother Darris, who was traded on Sunday. The three had combined for 79 points so far this season.
Rochester: Pat O’Toole, a former Bandit, was a runner-up for March Player of the Month. Included in his games last month was a 40-saves performance in Buffalo two weeks ago. Casey Powell won the Rookie of the Month. Until last Saturday, the Knighthawks had been unbeaten (6-0) with him in the lineup this season. His 24 points lead all NLL rookies.

Injuries:
Buffalo: Andy Ogilvie -- right ACL tear (30 January); out for the season... Chris McCarten -- left knee injury (preseason); will not play this weekend...
Rochester: Kevin Dance -- sprained ankle (27 March); out 1-3 weeks... Steve Dietrich (G) - torn ACL, right knee (22 January); out for the season... Tom Carmean -- abdominal strain (26 December); out for the season...

Notable:
The Bandits have made the playoffs in each of their first seven seasons. A loss Saturday would officially end their post-season chances... In addition to Kilgour, who came over with Dean Cecconi, the Knighthawks also have former Bandits in O’Toole, Ted Dowling, Mike Hasen, and Randy Mearns... Buffalo finished just 1-5 at home, but has lost just once on the road in four tries, and that by just one goal. Their season concludes at Syracuse next Saturday... The Bandits need to stay out of the penalty box as they have the second most penalty minutes in the league and their penalty killing unit is last (.506)... Rochester now leads the all-time regular season series 6-3.

Tickets:
At the Blue Cross Arena, at Ticketmaster outlets, through Ticketmaster charge-by-phone (716.232.1900), and via the Rochester Knighthawks website.
