Super Six: Stealth slips by Swarm, 12-9 Riggers, Rock regain winning form; Blizzard KOs Titans-Wings A few weeks ago, the Washington Stealth was just blasting the hell out of anyone it faced -- 17-8 and 15-7 victories to open the season. Since then, the victories have become a lot narrower and the games quite a bit more nerve-wracking for the Red and Black faithful. Saturday night in Everett, the Stealth allowed Minnesota to rally for an 8-8 tie early in the fourth quarter before pounding out four fourth-quarter goals and maintaining order in the Western Division, 12-9. The Toronto Rock, meanwhile, had a much easier time maintaining control in the East, clipping Philadelphia's Wings, 19-11, on Friday and stealing a victory from the Buffalo Bandits on Saturday, 14-10. In other Week Five action, Calgary avenged last week's loss to Edmonton, defeating the Rush, 13-8; Matt Vinc impersonated a stone wall in Orlando's 12-5 win at Colorado; and Boston pushed past Rochester, 14-8. A winter storm postponed Saturday's game between Orlando and Philadelphia; no make-up date was announced.
Watson, Billings named January's best Veteran goalie, 1st-round pick led Rock to 3-1 start The National Lacrosse League has named Toronto Rock goaltender Bob Watson as the Player of the Month and teammate Garrett Billings as the Rookie of the Month for their performances in January. Watson, who has played for the Rock all thirteen seasons of the franchise's existence, posted a 6.67 goals against average in four games last month, a number that would have been even lower if not for a subpar showing in the Rock's final game of the month. His big moment was at home against Rochester, making 45 saves in a 17-3 thrashing of the Knighthawks. Billings, meanwhile, burst onto the scene in Toronto as a first-round entry draft selection and has quickly jumped to the top of the stat sheet, leading the Rock with 13 goals. Billings has two five-goal outings and an overtime game-winner to his credit already.
Bandits finally get a win, 11-7 In most seasons, the last team to claim a victory is a perennial cellar-dweller or a club with a lightly-scheduled January (or both). In 2010, the dubious honor falls to Buffalo, which entered Week Four with a record of 0-4. The Bandits won't be leaving it 0-5, having posted an 11-7 victory Saturday night over the Minnesota Swarm. A 4-0 third quarter ended up being the difference. Frank Resetarits tallied a hat trick for the Bandits, while Mark Steenhuis was his old play-making self, dishing out seven assists. In other Saturday night action, the Rochester Knighthawks got even for last week's dreadful 17-3 loss at Toronto (and erased, kinda, Friday's 13-8 setback at Orlando) by crushing the Rock, 16-8; Edmonton defeated Calgary in another installment of the Battle of Alberta, 14-11; and Washington remained unbeaten by rallying past Colorado, 12-11. Earlier in the day, Boston held down Philadelphia, 11-9, leading almost the entire 60 minutes.
Rock defense lights out against K'Hawks Saturday night was Retro Night at Air Canada Centre, in one more way than even we had in mind. For years, the Rochester Knighthawks could never catch a break in Toronto. They would lose big, lose small, lose in big games, just plain lose. Although the Knighthawks' prospects at Air Canada Centre have improved the past few years, Saturday was not their night for improving to 3-0. A suddenly scary-good Toronto Rock defense produced two shutout quarters and rolled to a 17-3 rout. Garrett Billings led the way with five goals for the Rock, which is now 3-0 and alone atop the East standings. Elsewhere on Saturday, the Colorado Mammoth pulled out another sudden death victory, rallying past Philadelphia, 12-11; the Mammoth won in overtime on Friday, too, leaving new coach Steve Govett 2-0 but still without a decision in regulation time. Later on, Washington (fresh off a 13-11 win over Buffalo) edged Calgary, 16-15, improving to 4-0 and opening a game-and-a-half lead atop the Western Division standings. In other Week Three action, Boston defeated Orlando, 13-9, for the Blazers' first win of 2010 and the Titans' first loss; and Edmonton topped Buffalo, 11-7.
Mammoth dismisses McMahon, Govett steps in It hasn't been a good start to the 2010 season for the Colorado Mammoth, with an opening-night disaster in Washington and a come-from-ahead loss against Edmonton. Changes? There were bound to be changes in Denver, which has reached the postseason every year since the former Washington Power came to town. The first change came Tuesday, when Bob McMahon was fired as head coach, replaced on an interim basis (or so it sounds) by team president and GM Steve Govett. McMahon was 16-20 in a little more than two seasons at the helm in Colorado. Govett's NLL coaching debut comes Friday at Minnesota.
Beware the Washington Stealth! Granted, when it operated out out of San Jose, the Stealth offense was no slouch, finishing third in goals scored last season. This year, the Washington Stealth have practically blown the roof off of Comcast Arena, opening with a 17-8 rout of Colorado last week and continuing with a 15-7 whipping of the Edmonton Rush on Friday night. The victories put Washington alone atop the Western Division, a game clear of anyone else. Back East, the Toronto Rock have also reached 2-0 after a second straight win over the Boston Blazers, this one an 8-7 decision courtesy of a Garrett Billings overtime goal. The Blazers then moved on to Philadelphia, losing again, 12-8; last year's expansion sensation is now 0-3. Elsewhere: Minnesota avenged last week loss at Calgary, dropping the Roughnecks, 12-10; Rochester defeated Buffalo again, 13-11; and Edmonton edged Colorado, 14-13.
