Rock sold to local businessman Terry Sanderson joins team as GM; Watters to stay on The Toronto Rock announced Tuesday that James Dawick, a businessman from Oakville, Ont., has purchased the team from the current ownership group. This is the second major ownership change in franchise history and the first since Bill Watters led a group of investors in purchasing the Ontario Raiders eleven years ago and relocated the team to Maple Leaf Gardens. "It is with confidence that we pass this team to Jamie," current Rock president Brad Watters said. "I know Jamie will continue to build the Rock for many years to come." Watters will remain with the team, at least through the transition period. Rejoining the club is Terry Sanderson, who had a successful run as the team's coach and general manager from 2004 to 2006. Sanderson now will focus his efforts on the GM role; a head coach may be named soon.
George Daniel retained as commish Longtime NLL executive will hold top job through 2011 The National Lacrosse League, in a move that should surprise no one, removed the word "interim" from the title of interim commissioner George Daniel on Tuesday, agreeing to terms on a two-year contract that will keep Daniel on board through the 2011 season. Daniel served most of the 2009 as the interim commish, a position he inherited after the hasty resignation of Jim Jennings in January. Prior to becoming commissioner, Daniel was a longtime fixture in NLL circles, serving as deputy commissioner, chief operating office and general counsel from 2001 to 2006 and again in 2008. For the 2007 season, Daniel moved across town to become the president of the New York Titans, then in their first NLL season.
Duane Jacobs steps down from Swarm Stop us if you've heard this before -- a successful player-turned-coach resigns in order to spend more time with family. A few weeks ago, it was Calgary Roughnecks boss Troy Cordingley, leaving the oil patch just weeks after guiding the team to its second NLL Champion's Cup. On Tuesday, the loss came from Minnesota, where coach Duane Jacobs has parted ways with the Swarm. While Cordingley is expected to resurface with a team closer to home, it looks like Jacobs' dance card might not include NLL for the foreseeable future, considering his involvement with the Iroquois Nationals and his day job as a lawyer. Jacobs played eleven seasons in MILL/NLL before moving behind the bench, posting a 25-25 record (including two postseason games) over three seasons with the Swarm.
Stealth sneaks off to Everett, Wash. In the first of what could be several franchise shifts this summer, the San Jose Stealth has relocated to Everett, Washington, where it will play at the 8,300-seat Comcast Arena. Never heard of Everett? It's located on the eastern shore of Puget Sound, about 30 miles north of Seattle and a tantalizingly close 110 miles south of Vancouver, where the NLL's Ravens played from 2002 to 2004. "We are very excited about our move to the Comcast Arena at Everett and to introduce the region to the thrilling and fast-paced sport of professional indoor lacrosse," Stealth owner Denise Watkins said. There's still no word on the fate of either the Portland LumberJax, whose ownership announced last month that it will not continue at Rose Garden, or the New York Titans, who've bounced around the Big Apple and may be ready to settle down in Newark.
Bob Hamley given the bum's Rush Perhaps the most vexing problem in the National Lacrosse League these days is how to squeeze some offense (any offense at all) from the Edmonton Rush, whose four-year run includes three last-place finishes in goals scored. You can't accuse Bob Hamley of not trying to square the circle, but you also can't call him head coach and general manager anymore. Rush president Gord Sawyer announced Tuesday that Hamley has been relieved his duties in both positions and the search is on for his successor (or successor, as the team might hire a different man for each job). "We did not have the home record that the team had hoped for, the team did not perform with the sense of urgency that was required at certain times in the season, and our offense again finished at the bottom of the league which is not acceptable," Sawyer said. Hamley was 9-18 in just short of two full seasons with the Rush, who still haven't appeared in the playoffs.
Roughnecks hold off Titans to win title Casey Powell brought his 'A' game to the National Lacrosse League championship game Friday night, scoring four goals and dishing out two assists, but it wasn't enough to earn the third-year New York Titans their first NLL Champion's Cup. Instead, final-minute tallies by Mike Carnegie and Bruce Codd helped keep Calgary a step ahead of the Titans, ultimately providing their Roughnecks with their second league title (they also won it all in 2004). Game MVP Josh Sanderson rewarded the 13,000 partisans in attendance with two goals, one coming just before halftime as the Riggers started to pull away from the Titans and the other capping a three-goal run that lifted Calgary to a 10-7 lead midway through the fourth quarter.
